When the maintenance required light blinks that just tells you that your car hasn't had the maintenance required light reset for 3500 miles or so. In another 1500 miles or so it will stay on all the time. This doesn't really mean anything is wrong with the car. You can usually reset it by holding in the odometer reset button as you turn the car on, depending on year.

Maintenance reqd. light is just a reminder based on mileage. For '98 it comes on every 7500 miles to remind you to change oil & whatever other scheduled maintenance. Couple hundred miles early it flashes but doesn't stay on.

Reset it...
- Key OFF
- Press & hold the odometer reset button
- While holding that button, turn key ON (don't need to start engine)
- Continue holding that button (seems like forever)
- Lamp will blink a few times & finally it'll go out.

But like I said, that light is just a reminder based on mileage. It simply goes off again 7500 miles after you reset it. It DOES NOT measure anything and it doesn't "KNOW" what you have or have not done for maintenance.

I change oil more often than 7500 miles, so that lamp is just a nuisance. You can't reset it until it comes on. I rely on my own records for maintenance & I just reset the lamp whenever it comes on.
