Default advice on what engine..suggestions?

hey i have a 95 civic hatch dx 5sp... i love it its got manual windows, no power steering.. get great gas mileage, it just has like 235k miles.. so eventually ill need to replace the engine and im not sure what to go with... ive seen a bunch of real quick hatchbacks with the h22a in it but i've heard that its not the best idea, does any one know why people recommend to not do the h22 swap into a hatch? id obviously like something quicker than my junky 1.5liter but i dont know if i could do a b16 or a h22.. any sugestions? which is easier to install? cause the ease of installation with help me gauge the price? and also generally which is more expensive? h22a engine/tranny/ecu package or the b16 engine/tranny/ecu package... thanks for the help.

you can get an h22 from hmotorsonline for 1950.00 and the hasport mount kit for 350 extra. An h22 civic would be very fun however a b16 is more expensive and makes way less power but its up to you.

people probably dont recommend h22s into civics becuase honda-tech is filled with elitists. if you swap anything but a k20 in a car these days they act like its the end of the world. "OMG AN H22 IS THE WORLD COLLAPSING?"

an h22 is the best power per dollar out of any motor swap.

The B-Series motors would be the most "plug and play" motor swap for your Civic.

b-series engine are a wonderful choice and are ultra reliable. what is your budget? how do you plan on using the car?

b16 should be out of the question unless you plan on boosting. it's gutless. i'd look at the b18c from the JDM integra GSR. it's a great platform.

h22 swap to me is interesting and always has been since viet lam, but it's alot of work, alot more than a b-series swap, and the engines no matter what anyone says on h-t are not as stout as b-series engines. h-t is like high school- you come in one day, and all the kids have a certain style going and swear it's the best. you come in a week or two later and they have a whole other thing crackin', even if it means getting up early to get the look right and bringing hair gel to school to keep it going throughout the day....

if you get a b18c it'll be a straightforward proven swap with no special mods to make you happy.

well i want to definitly keep reliability.. ive seen tons of preludes with well over 150k miles... i dont want to boost it so id be staying N/A. id also like the best bang for my buck and hopefully nothing too expensive. i think a b18 is far more than a h22 right? how do they compare in reliability and gas mileage ? also the install process on both... which is more drawn out and costly?

haha, h22 installation is more complex than b-series, but not impossible as evidenced by the bunch of people who have done it. you have to cut up the tunnel to allow for cable actuated shifting among some other things that are not necessary with a b-series swap.

...as far as costly, up front the b-series complete swap is not cheap, esp for one that means something like a b18c, but, don't forget an h22 swap in your car is expensive too because you need to get custom axles for it to be right, you need to get aftermarket mounts and you should get a radiator or atleast as slim fan, where as with the b-series you can use the stuff either that you already have or that comes with the swap.

you see a bunch of h22 with over 150k? well, i'd be curious to see how much oil they consume because they are notorious for that due to their cylinder composition.

ill ask again, what do you plan on doing with the car, what is your budget?

I get right around 28mpg around town and 30mpg on the highway (I've seen 32mpg before, but it's hard to drive that easy) in my B18C1 powered hatchback with full interior and A/C.

I'd definitely recommend a GS-R

Then the B18C or C1 is the way to go.

The USDM Integra GS-R is a B18C1.

In Japan (JDM), the B18C is the code for both the GS-R and the more powerful Type-R.

If you were to buy a B18C from a dealer (example:hmotorsonline.com), it would say "GS-R equivalent" or something along that line.

to be honest i was leaning towards a h22, but you guys know way more about this stuff than I do, and it seems like the b18 is more of what i need. its ultra reliable, and will have (hopefully) the power im looking for.

ballpark, how much do you guys think the installation would be, and is there any way to salvage money off my old motor/tranny? junkyard ? metalyard? do they pay anything for an old motor?

to sell d-series parts, you can either list it on here or on a more focused board like d-series.org (well, you could, if they didn't have the post count requirement)

someone SOMEWHERE will need something cheap to get a car running again. you wont get much for it, but you'll get something.

in all honesty, with help from a friend or two and the internet, you should be able to handle the b-series installation yourself ; )

it might seem major, but it's really not, as long as you do the appropriate research.

I sold my D15B7 (engine and tranny) for $450 locally.

I also saved alot of money on the B-series by buying a wrecked Civic that had the swap in it for $800 (full car, so I had extra parts to upgrade to).

Depending on how much you bought the motor/tranny/ecu, etc. for you could probably get the swap done for 4-5K (if you were to buy the swap for 3K) would be my best guess. Just make sure the shop you take it to has experience with motor swaps and won't do a hackjob.

(Example: The wrecked Civic I bought had the swap done at a Dodge dealership...VTEC wasn't wired properly and was missing the rear motor mount )

the going rate for a b-series in your car, labor alone, is ~500 for a private individual to 800-1000+ from a reputable honda performance shop. If all parts are present for the swap, it should take, ideally, about 8 hours.

i don't know where you are located so it might be a more competitive area...

that's awesome. i can't sell my built y8 w/ trans that puts down over 150whp for $800!

your best bang for the buck with the most possibilites for down the road IMO is going to be a b18a1 swap (Ls motor)

it will defenitally be much more fun then the d15, and from there you can pick up a GSR or b16 head when you get money togeather again, and build a very nice LS vtec for under $700 if you do it right.

or, if you want to drop the cash, do the GSR swap as everyone is suggesting. i had a GSR in my 94 coupe with a turbo, and it was IMO the best bang for your buck you can do with a honda. stock GSR motor with a GANGSTER turbo kit.

i say swap in the LS, and boost it. people are selling LS longblocks almost as cheap as d series these days, so if you blow it up, just throw in another longblock and keep going. LAWL.

i believe the OP is in a situation like me. i didn't want to open up anything; i wanted a bone stock reliable honda engine because i've had built engines for almost 10 years in my car. the jdm gsr was the best choice because it's not as costly as the R, but with a few choice bolt-ons and tuning you can make similar power with uber-reliability.

a stock block unopened b18a/b will not be fun.

a ls-vtec would be fun, but they've proven themselves to be less than ideal in terms of reliability.

well according to hmotorsonline i can get the h22a complete change over kit for 2,200 plus shipping or i could get the b18c GSR complete change over kit for 3,150.. that is almost 1,000 more even before shipping. and on top of both price tags i need to add in labor which i could guess at 1,000? to be safe. so that is like 3,200 for an h22a and 4,150 for a b18c gsr. seeing how the h22a makes more power and is cheaper im confused as to why only one person recommended me to do that vs the gsr. is the h22a that unreliable? cause the numbers look better on side of the h22a price and power wise.

well, i said the going rate for a b-series into your car, labor only, would be 500 private party, up to 1k for a shop, maybe more.

with an h-series, you are looking at more support parts like i said. you will need to get an aftermarket mount kit. i know hmotors can give you the right combination of axles instead of the prelude units, but i'm unsure if he'll charge extra for that.

and finally, installation for the h22 will be, if i had to guess, another 300-500 because it's more involved than the straight forward b-series swap.

i think it has more to do with everyone knows more people that have reliable trouble-free b-series swaps than reliable, trouble-free daily driven h-series swaps.

it's a single cam i built a few years ago. it's a nice piece, but it's been hard to sell for some reason. to me it seems like a killer deal because you get so much **** for only 800 bucks, but people are weird!

i'll be honest, i mean, a bone stock y8 swap with trans would cost about the same (800) as what i'm selling my built high compression y8 with a **** load of extra parts, a ported head, crower cam, springs and ti retainers, aem cam gear, skunk intake manifold, clutch masters flywheel and clutch, etc, etc etc...
