ls/vtec
hey, im interested in a new engine for my 94 ls. i want ls/vtec. does anyone know of a company that actually makes them? i've seen one for like 1300 with a 6 month warranty but i cant find it anywhere? anyone know ??
nobody "makes" ls/vtec engines. what it is is simply taking your LS bottom end and mating it to a GSR head. The lower compression of the LS is what accounts for the near 200 flywheel HP you get from an ls/vtec engine.
Use your existing LS block and just buy a VTEC head for around $600... try to find a shop in your area that will put it on for you. Hybrid forum should have more info on ls/vtec

Do you guys just guess when you answer questions ?
LS/vtec is a vtec head on an LS (b18b or b18a) block. The procedure to mate the vtec head to this block is not just "Buy a head and put it on". It involves machine work to the head to close an oil passage, re-drill dowel holes and in some cases, mill the head. It is an involved install, not extremely difficult, but you must know certain things particular to LSVT conversions to ensure you don't destroy the motor. (oil lines, ecu changes, wiring...) Do a search on LS vtec or LSVT as I like to call it. You can also look for Frankenstein (slang term as well) or B20/vtec or CRVtec (which does the same thing with a CRV block).
The previous post about the lower compression creating 200 fly Hp is totally wrong. The lower compression pistons in your LS block will create no where near 200 hp, more like 150-170 at most. Lower compression does NOT create power, higher compression does. In order to take advantage of an LSVT setup, you need to change pistons to a higher compression set, such as a GSR, ITR, B16 (Si) or CTR piston. Granted just the vtec head will make power, but you will be nowhere near what you may expect. The higher compression piston creates more hp thru....*drumroll*... MORE COMPRESSION !
As a topper, your LS tranny has long gearing....which is less than optimal for a naturally aspirated car, so you will be a bit slower than otherwise equipped LSVT cars... ie: an LSVT with a GSR tranny or even an SI, ITR or vtec DelSol tranny (shorter gearing to get you to speed faster).
There are engine builders that build LSVTs and sell them as whole motors, but you would need to make sure they know what they are doing.... LSVTs can be very bitchy if not done properly.
You need to do alot of research to know everything you need or might want to do...
Good Luck
