Default can a headgsket not seat?

So i did an ls/vtec and reamed the holes for the dowels. But since i did that it smokes really bad and leaks oil from the exhaust passenger side of the head. So im guessing it didnt seat right possibly. Also i think when i put the HG on the block it wasnt sitting totaly flat, like one of the holes i remed was off and was causing a very slight bulge in the middle....if that makes sense. But im getting 175 compression across the board.

175 is pretty damn low for an ls/vtec but then again, i have no idea what comp. ratio you're at. if its 8.5 or 9.0:1 then i suppose its just fine. but how the hell would i know since you didnt tell us a damn thing except that you're leaking oil from a headgasket that you said yourself didnt look right at the time of install

To be honest, i think you answered your own question man.

If something doesnt look right to me when i'm assembling my motors dont just giver on ahead and hope it doesnt leak or blow up, i make it right. At the time, when its easier and cheaper.

Im also wondering what headgasket you used, and if was installed upside-down or not. help us out a bit here.

it was an oem HG and it was installed right. but im also worried that when my wideband was going out that i was slowly tuning it leaner and leaner and finaly the plugs looked white. So maybe i might have broke a ringland on one of the pistons. thats why im wondering if it is more likely a leaky HG or a broken piston. And it doesnt smoke as bad when im at WOT, but when i let out of it is when the smoke pours. It has no water or overheating issues at all. I mean it still smokes under WOT, but not that bad. so i dunno.

smoke during engine braking is a sign of inadequate ringseal.

what was the endgap on the rings at install, and what type of rings were they? Also, did you file the rings at all?

One more, since the HG may be bad anyway you might want to pull off the head to see if there is any visible damage inside the cylinder bores or on the tops of the pistons
