Default 96-98 vs. 99-00 EK, is one better?

i'm currently in the market for an ek hatch (lower mileage the better). besides the front end and rear tails among other things, is there a difference between the two? does one have more build errors, a better interior, more smoother driving, etc?

is one better than the other? or is just "which one you like better"?

also, is there anything specific to look for when buying one?

thanks inadvance

as far as style, that's definately personal preference. Sometimes 96-98 looks sick, sometimes bland and boring. I usually prefer 99-00.

As far as performance, not much, if anything really. That's why if you look in a Chilton or Haynes manual (i know they're more general) they just give you the year and trim levels. If you notice any difference among them, it's going to be what trim you decide to get that really matters.

Looks are all personal opinion, so might as well not be mentioned.

Differences:
- Front ends are different.
- Rear bumpers are slightly different on the coupes and sedans.
- Sedan trunk and inner taillights completely different.
- Coupe and hatch taililghts different colors (same shape) for different years.
- Center dash console is different, climate control is electric instead of manual for '99-'00.

The '96s seem to have a few oddities at least as far as physical parts (front grille is one piece and front bumper's air damn underneath the car is shorter from what I've seen).

All trims are available for all years 1996 to 2000 (2DR DX, 2DR EX, 2DR HX, 3DR CX, 3DR DX, 4DR DX, 4DR EX, 4DR LX) besides the 2DR Si ('99-'00 only), the 4DR DX-V aka VP ('99-'00 only) and the 4DR GX ('98-'00 only).

The following cars come with the SOHC non-VTEC engine (D16Y7):
- CX (hatch)
- DX (coupe, hatch and sedan)
- DX-V / VP (sedan)
- LX (sedan)

The following cars come with the SOHC VTEC engine (D16Y8):
- EX (coupe and sedan)

The following cars come with the SOHC VTEC-E engine (D16Y5):
- HX (coupe)

The following cars come with the SOHC VTEC CNG engine (D16B5):
- GX (sedan)

The following cars come with the DOHC VTEC engine (B16A2):
- Si (coupe)

The '98s have a TSB for the wiper motors. There are other TSBs out there, most of them covering some or all of the generation. All the years have problems with the windows coming off the tracks and/or bending the tracks.

If you have any questions about interior or exterior colors, I can post those all up for the USDM Civics too.

Meanwhile, I would say a '99-'00 conversion is a worthless mod, and if you want a '99-'00 front end, buy a '99-'00.

The '99-'00 and the '96-'98 both look just as boring and plain when they're both stock and dirty. The '96-'98 front has three stock lips and the '99-'00 one only has one (some say the CTR lip is different from the Si lip, but in the unlikely event that it's true, it's so close it's not worth buying one over the other).

The EX and Si both are fully loaded and have moonroofs. This include power windows and locks.

These are some good infos. Some I never knew. I guess any any year you get, u can make it looks really nice or REALLY crappy. ALL depends on you the owner. Since you're looking for lower milage car, I would think the new the year the better chance you have. Correct me if im wrong! just some inputs.

Nope. No '96-'00 USDM hatch came with VTEC.

And that's only if someone wants an Si. There are many reasons to pass up the Si and get a lower trim Civic instead.

These reasons include the probability of theft (especially with an Si, but moreso with an EBP Si) and the wanting to swap in a different engine, making the purchase of an Si a waste of money (it's other major upgrade beig rear disk).

As far as the body of the Si goes, there are few ways it is different from other '99-'00 Civics.

All the USDM ones you saw did. They were swapped if they had a DOHC engine.

Nope.

There are no EKs in the US.

Here are the USDM '96-'00 (6G) Civic trims.

EJ6 (D16Y7 - SOHC non-VTEC)
- '96-'00 CX hatch
- '96-'00 DX coupe / hatch / sedan
- '99-'00 DX-V aka VP sedan
- '96-'00 LX sedan

EJ7 (D16Y5 - SOHC VTEC-E)
- '96-'00 HX coupe

EJ8 (D16Y8 - SOHC VTEC)
- '96-'00 EX coupe / sedan

EM1 (B16A2 - DOHC VTEC)
- '99-'00 Si coupe

EN1 (D16B5 - SOHC VTEC CNG*)
- '98-'00 GX sedan

* - CNG = Compressed Natural Gas

Cars with the B16A2 in the US include the '99-'00 Civic Si coupe and the del Sol VTEC (I can't remember which years... maybe '96-'97? Most came with the B16A3 instead).

i have owned a 96 ex coupe and i currently own a 99ex coupe. personally i like the 99 they are almost the same cars both mechanically and physically the only real difference is the interior. the main difference is power climate control. but the decision is up to u best of luck
