The sticker on the tranny is usually the tranmission number (e.g., XXXX-XXXXX tranmission type - serial number).

VIN numbers are usually engraved on various parts of the car, e.g., engine compartment firewall, engine bay, plate in front of windshield. There suppose to be other hidden areas for law enforcement to tell if the stuff is stolen.

if there is a DC2 anywhere in the number your looking at then its a vin number

 

The 94s did not have the VIN plate on the transmission. I think that started in 96 or 97 for USDM.
