Default rebuild or replace h22?

ok so my situation is i'm buying a 99 prelude, its a 5spd and of course the h22. well the problem is that the previous owner let the damn thing run out of oil so now its not running. i'm thinking its probably siezed up. but either way its gonna need to be fixed. now my question is would it be cheaper to rebuild the current motor or just get another used motor? i'm trying to get it running again for less than 1500. looking aroud it seems that not many people are in the buisseness of rebuilding these motors or suppying parts to do it. and the few that do seem rather pricey. i'm hopeing i just need a new botom end but i wont know untill i tear it apart so i'm assumeing the worse and thinking the whole thing will need to be rebuilt. anybody know where i can get parts i need to rebuild one of these or another shortblock?

You wont know the extent of the damage until you tear it down. So just having people say ya or na is about as smart as drinking gas and pissing on a brush fire to try and put it out. The way i see it, your gonna have to have the motor out anyways, so pull it check it, and replace if the spec is way out of tolerance. You might be able to get a used longblock from a local wreckin yard for 1500 but your gonna be over that with a rebuild, unless you have access to a machine shop and do work yourself.

when it runs out of oil enough to seize it up, that means there was alot of friction. Friction gets hot, hot metal can easily be warped. It could just be the block if you got lucky. But if there was no oil, that means the head wasnt getting oil and the same rule applies.

true. i didnt think about the head. i'm used to working on v8's with iron heads and blocks that rarely warp or get dammaged beyond repaire. i found a h22 and auto tranny for 1300 bucks localy, but i wanna look inside this one before i jump to a new motor. hell even if i buy another motor i can sell this one as a core to make a little cash back.

and chuckles i dont see how my question was stupid in any way. i wasnt asking weather the motor the motor needs to rebuilt or not, i was simply asking for a place to get parts trying to find the lest expensive solution to my problem

If it was me, I would replace it with a known running H22. Then tear down the H22 out of the car and sell of the useable parts to recoupe some money back.

Also, before replacing the engine, take the time to change the timing belt, water pump, and switch to a manual timing belt tensioner.

I would say for the price just buy a longblock from hmotorsonline. I bought from a local company and got screwed on some little stuff, so wish I went with them. I was looking at a longblock shipped like 1400, so for peace of mind its worth it!

before you know if it will be cheaper to replace or rebuild, you will have to take it apart and check everything. you will want to start w/ the head, check the cams and cam journals first. if those are scored up then its a safe bet the bottom end is going to look alot worse. in the bottom end youll want to check the crank obviously, but its also important to note weather or not it spun a main bearing. if so then youll need to have the line bore of the block checked out at the machine shop. obviously if the cam and crank journals are both bad, then your 1500 budget will not work.

I replaced my h22 when my crank broke, only cause i don't have time to wait for a rebuild. So i went out and forked up $4700 h22 (includes installation). Got new water pump, belts, oil pan, motor mounts, axels, front brakes, and oh yeah new oil.ha. Sucks but i love what vtec does for me. My bottom end is all gone except the crank pulley but the top is still good...
