also he doesn't have title in hand, what kinda precautions should be taken?

In that case, if you get it... Take your money (whether it be cash in hand, or your own personal banks cuts you a check for it, which in turn his bank would then transfer the title to your bank) and go to his bank, give them the money, they get the title, he signs it over to you and you take it back to your bank.

If he's financed through a dealership(and if you need financed too) you could always just go to that dealership and do all the paperwork there. Unless you want to use a bank.
Basically the guy does not own the bike; the dealership does. If he doesn't pay, he get's reposessed.
