Default Looking for input on an idea for H22

Well bout a month ago I got into the honda scene, I bought a 1990 Prelude SI, and I keep on hearing about an H22 swap and turboing it. But what I was looking at was mixing some muscle car ways and bringing them into the import scene with stroker kits, boar overs, stainless cranks, pop up pistons and port and polish etc..... I am sure I am not the only one to do this, but I just want to know if I would be wasting my time, any input helps. Thanks

You're never wasting your time if you're doing something you're passionate about. To answer your question, I heard that the B-series motors are easier to swap in the 3rd gen Preludes than the H-series. There are also a lot more aftermarket parts for the B-series out there. You might want to look into that.

Anyone who builds a serious NA setup is going to mix in some of the "muscle car" techniques you mentioned.

Sure a lot of people go turbo on the import engines, but there's a good number who go the other route and build up the motor as well. The difference is that for the money it seems more cost effective to just go turbo.

These engines don't have a lot of displacement as is and even with major motor work you pretty much max out the potential on them at a relatively low ceiling (around 250whp-270whp NA IIRC for a very serious build). But when you look at the fact that for an H22 being a 2.2 litre and making over 100whp per litre, that's pretty impressive.

im not too sure how much trouble the difference swaps is... but i do know that unless your planning to build the H22 i wouldn't even begin to think about a turbo... and for the 'muscle car' thing... motors are motors... all they know is air/fuel and timing.... not how it gets there... muscle/tuner thats a discussion for another day...haha good luck man

Thanks alot for the input so far, I know I am getting some flack for the "Muscle Car" quote but hell that is what I grew up on **** my first car was a 1963 Chevy Impala SS, still got it too. But thats neither here nor there. And the fellas that mentioned the cost and just putting a turbo on, yeah I have taken that into retrospect, but I just like the idea of cranking out close to if not 300 horse out of a 4 cylinder naturally asperiated. My goal I know it may seem a little far fetched but I want 11-12 second car on street tires and pump gas. If can be done with a camaro, why not a Honda right?? Thanks again guys I really do apperciate the help and support

is the car meant to be streetable?

because 300whp is probably not going to be very streetable in an N/A set up on a H22

Traction would also probably be an issue at that point.

11's on street tires from a FWD is asking a lot man but you can get there, but you need to look past just the motor. Lots of weight reduction and suspension work are going to be need as well.

i have already done what you are talking about, but i did it in a civic hb. the car weighed in at 2100 lbs. w/ driver and the h22 that i started w/ ended up being a 2.4 liter once it was given a 95mm stroke and a 90mm bore. the motor made close to 280 whp/ 210 wtq on a dynojet chassis dyno (to the wheels) and i ran consistant 11.62's @ 118 mph. the car still had some et left in it but i was having traction problems which led to other problems. those et's were run w/ the car set up for comp4 class which included a 6 point cage, slicks/skinnies, open header, and for interior all i had were dash, door panels, headliner and carpet.

the car also went 12.2 on radial tires when it was setup for nhra street stock class. this included full exhaust, full interior, radial tires all around, and a min. weight of about 2250 lbs. this et was w/ a rare 1.7 60' on radials. normaly you will see around 1.8-2.0's on radial tires. my 60's on slicks were always in the 1.6's

i wouldnt say the motor was very streetable since it did have 14:1 compression and was run on vp race gas, but i did drive it occasionally on the street and i will tell you theres not enough room to run a big enough tire to get that tq. to the ground. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears were usless and it was still spinning well into 4th.

if i were you i would decide exactly what you want to do w/ the car before you start spending $$ and if you decide to make it streetable i would limit tq around 175ish otherwise your not going to want to drive it on the street. and if your looking for a race car, i would look into another car.
