main and rod bearing questions......
hey guys, i have a d16y7 block that i bored .040 over with p29's, i am now re-assembling it, this is my first build, my question is, with all the piston kits and so-forth on ebay, they come with std, acl bearings, now when i took this apart, all the bearings looked fine, so did journals and inner rod caps and such, are honda motors typically good with the std. bearings when doing a rebuild, or are getting resized bearings a common factor when getting the oil clearance right, thanks i appreciate it
use plasticgauge from any parts store in the green pack. check your repair manual to get the exact clearances. sometimes they work sometimes u need to get them sized. acl's are great bearings but only when the clearances are right. if they arent youll be taking it back apart soon
thanks for the help, nice to see a fellow VA'r, ill go pick up some plastigauge, but one more question, i should buy new honda bearings.....std. ones, then check the oil clearance right? with the new bearings
Too my knowledge,(don't hold me to this) but your (std/stock)bearings should be fine as long as the wear on your crank journals isn't too bad/or if you've had them re-surfaced?..please really correct me if I'm wrong.

exactly, if wear is minimal to known then sure the std. bearings would be fine, its just this is my first build, and i was just wondering if the crank journals usually stay in shape or if its common to "customize" your oil clearance caz the journals have worn

well firstly, get a good educated opinion on the state of your journals. Again im no expert, but wear,on a crank journal is "wear'; like gouges or lines that you can feel with your finger scratches etc.. that stuff needs to be re-surfaced.
I don't know the step ups off my memory, but i think you get like std size, then like +.030'' ."035'' etc. it just depends on how much they need to take off as they re-surface the crank. like if they take .025" off the journal right. There will be a gap between the journal and the std bearing of .025'', = no good. so the up-sized bearing will take up the rest of that space. RIGHT? I'm right, right?

to my knowledge, if the crank has any damage on it, it is basically ruined, or the machine shop can maybe put a new thin peice of metal over it, to give it a new smooth surface, if the crank is worn down, then that where new different sized bearings come into play for the correct oil clearance
