Default Synthetic oil in transmission?

Does anybody out there run synthetic oil in their transmission? Anybody know of a reason why not?

No, in fact, car craft magazine reccomends it (even though it was a domestic t-5 tranny), so I don't see why it could hurt. If anything, it should make it smoother.

yes, it makes smoothing shifter and probably life of the tranny alot longer.

Well, since there's 3 for synth, I've got to chime in with 1 against. I tried it for a while. In sub zero weather it was great, but there was a little too much gear crunching at times. Supposedly, synth is a little too slippery for the synchros and such. I'm currently running Honda MTL, and it's just fine.

syn. tranny fluid = goodbye synchros!!!!!

The synchros NEED some friction to work.

Screw all this other synthetic junk. I used everything (mobil 1 motor oil, redline mtl - cuz I'm an idiot) then everybody told me to drain that redline crap cuz it sucks, and put in the Honda MTL. It works wayyyyy better than anything else. Think about it, honda designed those trannys, and now they have an oil that is made specifically for those trannys. Anybody that doesn't have Honda MTL in their tranny doesn't know what their doing - it's that simple.

BTW: if you're still obsessed with 'synthetic' oil, then you'll be happy to know that the Honda MTL is part synthetic as well...

I'll second Mr. Todd's reply, definitely use Honda MTL. If you are going to use something else, use regular 10w30 motor oil, but do not under any circumstances use synthetic motor oil in your transaxle.

When I asked the Honda dealer for MTL, they said "It's the same stuff as regular motor oil" and told me it wasn't worth the price. they recommended 5w30 motor oild. I now use castrol gtx 5w30 and it feels fine!

it sounds like no one is really sure on what oil is best for a honda tranny. i have gone through a few tranny swaps and tried different oil each time. chiltons crx manual recommends honda MTL or 10w-40. most honda's third gear grinds because of worn sincros. 5W-30 oil will make your tranny loud but does the job.

Just based on smell alone I can tell honda MTL isn't the same as motor oil.

It mean's the same thing.

Some people just call it Fluid(what it should be called) instead of "Liquid" as honda put's it.

whatever, screw honda MTF tranny oil. just go and get some 10w-40 oil at the store for a lot cheaper and it will do the same thing. i paid $4.80 a quart for honda tranny oil and it didn't work any better then the old oil i had in it before.

the drain will be on the very bottom of the trans case, you will see a 3/8 square opening where you put a ratchet with no socket to open it.
