i'd take spoon because I like the whole carbon kevlar theme. As for which seats are better, it all depends. I've never sat in a spoon seat so i can't say.

Mugen is fiberglass, but it can take a hit of 40G's from behind.

What exactly is required of full bucket seats for competition use? Holding features to maintain a steady driving position minimizing to-and-fro G, information features relaying the car’s behavior, and most important — safety features. Mugen has paid particular attention to these points in developing bucket seats over the years, and has established its own independent safety and design standards. In one circuit crash scenario, a forward impact occurs. In this case, the driver’s body is protected by the belt harness (seatbelt). Another scenario involves a collision from the rear. In this case, it is the seat that protects the driver. Mugen aimed to develop a seat that will not be broken even if it is accelerated 40G from the rear. The final specifications were eventually determined through numerous repeated destruction tests. The shell consists of a composite material of fiberglass and vinyl ester resin. The resulting structure has the necessary resistance to the stress distribution. Incidentally, the seat fitted as standard in the Type R is of German manufacture. The standard seat does rot, have a full bucket design, and is made to suit the comfort requirements and body proportions of various drivers. Ironically, at approximately 13.6 kg per leg (excluding seat rails), it is even heavier than conventional mass-production vehicle seats. The S1 Mugen full bucket seat has a weight of 5.8 kg per leg (excluding seat rails) while boasting high strength. Likewise, the tight shell configuration, patch section using the minimum necessary fabric, seat cushioning, and Ecsaine cover maintain high holding characteristics. Also, the hip point (sitting position) is located approximately 70 mm lower than normal to give a direct driving feel. Specially designed seat rails (available separately) are used for mounting.

I haven't had a chance to sit in the S1....
but from the Spoon side of the story...that little divet shown in the above pic is a great piece that supports your spine.

The material also hugs you well and reminds me of a towel...so comfort and seating position in general, the Spoon is great..

The thing that irks me is the actual shape of the bucket....it seems very wide at the "mouth" of the bucket where your hamstrings will rest on....granted I'm a pretty thin guy at 5'10 145lbs....but I've noticed quite a bit of movement....

It's really as if its too big....? Anybody else notice this?

both seats are the same thing. Personally I feel they are both stupid because they arn't FIA approved. Theirfore all racing groups, rather it be NHRA, IDRC, etc... or track groups like SCCA, etc... all will not qualify those seats for racing use. However I do know many people who get away with. EP, etc... all use those seats and seem to not have a problem. However I know for drag use they will bust you if your class requires FIA cert.
Just go with some JDM's, Recaro, or Sparco, etc... don't waist your money on over priced BS. Whats funny is even Mr. Spoon, type one, etc... all think were stupid for spending so much money on these parts when US stuff is just as good. Yeah I do it also, however I make sure I will be ok and that I will always pass.

But if I were to choose between the two seats, I would get the Mugen. Why? Why not? Why pay double the price for a seat (spoon) thats carbon kevlar? 40G impact, I don't think you gotta be concerned about the seat in a hit like that. The car will explode first and just leave you in the seat dead. lol Carbon kelvar seats are good for heavy trq cars, and cars with extreme g forces on them (IE WRC) that are prone to flip over a lot. So if I were to choose I would get the Mugens, however if it really was me choosing I would do like Chris did and just get a basic seat that does its function and take the saved money to put that seat to use on the track with tons of track time. A lot better idea. Plus to have the seats without a cage and 5pt harness setup is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Why get a bucket seat thats all raced out with "0" reclineablilty to just use them as seats. They have harness points on them for a reason. And yes 5pt holes on them. Not 4pt. Also to make the seats live up to the reason they were made and to justify the money spent, you need a cage to do with them not only to mount the harnesses on but to add protection to the seats, driver, etc...

If you want just a seat for semi-track, drag, etc... use just get a nice sparco, recaro, etc... or a nice non-bucket seat. Its kinda like driving around with race slicks on the street. No point at all. lol

The Auto Advance seat is better since it cost less than $500.

FIA is the ruling body for Asia and Europe so the seat probably wouldn't legal for sanctioned races in the US anyway.

acutally if you ever race here in a race class that needs seats like this, you will know that they have to be FIA approved with a current FIA sticker on them that those the date made and the model, etc...

I'd take Spoon... but that's because I'm their Poster Child...

I'm a fan of the carbon kevlar theme myself.

I'd probably take neither since my damn ghetto booty wouldn't fit in them

I have trouble fitting in momo seats, but I find sparco's fit me nicely so my choice would probably be the Sparco Carbon

B18Ckiller.. Try Takakaira. I will no longer be helping people find parts !

The company that makes the seat is Auto Advance and here's a link to their original parts page. Good luck!

dang thats a copy of my seats. They even copied the Spoon version of the seats rather then the Vision version. I called my friend in Japan and according to them those knock off seats are really bad. The bolt are normally in the wrong spots and the material they use comes apart a lot. hmmm still not worth it IMO. I don't see why people just get normal seats that are proven to work rather then trying to be different and getting all messed up with junk. Theirs a reason why people stay away from this stuff and don't buy it because its cheep. Its cheep because its quality and fitment sucks. Kinda like buying B-stock stereo equipment or buying name brand clothing from a outlet. 99% of the time something is wrong with it and thats why its cheep.
Also thats $500 for that seat with a 99% chance its messed up. Then add in the shipping cost and duties and customs fee's which are probally like $400. Then add in the waiting for it of around 1-4 months. So that like $900 for a seat the might not work correctly and cannot be returned. Hmmm $900? I could buy a really nice seat here in the US or a seat thats known to work good and get it in less time and will be happy. $900 could get you a nice momo, sparco, recaro, omp, mugen, etc... easily. Heck if you want the real deal of this seat just get the 1st version RECARO SPG. Just get the FPR one and its like $800-1100 for the seat. All black with the recaro name on it which I'm sure 99% of people want to show off their bling bling.
Oh yeah and did I mention you will have FIA cert on the Recaro SPG seat to make it legal in racing? Yeah not a bad deal. $800-1100 for the real seat (with FIA cert. that has been copied by every other japan race company.)
Oh yeah and if you want the Mugen or the old Spoon look then get the seat that they copied. The Recaro Pole Position. SAME EXACT THING. And probally for a lot less.
See:

if you read their site the show seats that fit different weight people. From Daliracing: All RECARO seats offered through this website have been previously sat in at least once and were originally purchased by me for my personal use in one of our 5 racing vehicles. That means that they come with a fast lap time built in!
