i was curious, i live in th dallas area and they just started emisions checks. Im about to do this swap, and i was wondering what i would have to do to make it pass an emissions test.
will it pass w/ a good cat? do i need to switch to obd1?
i am sorta new to swaping, anyone that has run into these problems please help, i need to know soon
thx

It depends on how they test. If they run the code on the block like in Cali you might have problems. Up here they just run it for emissions and that's all... I had to replace my cat and then I passed with no problems. Just make sure all your emissions is hooked up and you shouldn't have a problem.

thats the way it used to be around here, then all the people had to move in and complain about the air blah blah blah
I'm also thinking about getting a b16a1, where did you get yours, 90civichbsi? What car are you dropping it into?
Thanks

my car is a 90 civic hb si, just look at the name itll tell ya
They don't check any engine identification stamps in TX (yet), just displacement, distributorless or distributor, and number of cylinders. And displacement we take off of hood stickers. Just a visual on cat, TAC, PCV, EGR (if applicable), AIS (if applicable) and EVAP systems. If you pass that, then off to the dyno you go. Good luck, starting in May, test standards are about twice as strict as previous years....

their going to be harder to pass, your car has to run cleaner than before
I think that's exactly what he means, I know with my RX7 (1987 N/A) they went from X number to a lower number here in Cal. I passed when I first got the car and failed the next time even though my numbers were the same, I had to replace some valve thing and then I passed with flying colors.
If your car's engine doesn't pass and you have to have the engine replaced/rebuilt to pass the test, the smog police will tell you that you better get to rebuilding because you can't drive the car if you don't.

Well I think there is a limit to how much they can make you spend on your car to have the engine brought up to code, but the basic idea is to get polluters off the streets.
Supposedly there's some loophole where you can get your BAR sticker if you have all your emissions equipment hooked up, and with a stock ecu.
I've seen guys in the Bay Area with BAR stickers with their B16a1's.

It means, HC went from 220 to the low 100 range max, and before there was no test for NO, now there is, also, CO levels are tighter. Usually a good running car will have no problems on either test. Yes, they are weeding cars out, specifically, owners in the lower economic bracket...sad but true. Guess they want poor people to use mass transit...yuk.
