Default Oil on timing belt side = bad cam seals?

I noticed a little oil around the TB side of the engine (H22). I'm thinking it could be just the VC gasket, or the cam seals. I have yet to open it up and take a look. I have to do a valve adjustment (sometime soon) and eventually the TB (not till the end of the year) so I have yet take a closer look

If it is the cam seals, is there a way to replace them w/o removing all of the timing gear? Anyone have a DIY?

Are there any other seals on that side that might be the cause? I'm going to clean that side up and keep an eye on it... it could always be spilled oil from me being impatient while changing the oil!

Thanks.

Well, usually after an oil change I spray brake cleaner over the axle/exhaust to get rid of the oil BUT I quickly found out that it will also strip paint off of your valve cover . I assume any mild degreaser should be okay.

Hmmm... I noticed most of it on the top/around the head rather than on the bottom

If you spray some carb cleaner it will 'melt' off those oil spots pretty fast. It also evaporates very quickly so it doesn't damage paint very much as long as you don't soak it.

Cool, I will have to give it a try...

Any idea on if the cam seals may be the culprit?

They could be...but then it could also be from the valve cover gasket like you said. That round rubber cam seal is notorious though, and you can get billet ones with triple o-rings for pretty cheap.

Yeah, I think I'm going to get a GE cam plug... but that thing is on the other side of the motor IIRC.

Yeah, you're right...I was thinking by TB you meant throttle body.

You also have the balance shaft oil seals on the timing belt side.

Good call, that thing is prone to leaking, isn't it? I thought I remember hearing about a recall, but that might not be for my year (1999).

And you cant replace that w/o removing the belts, right? That's the one thing I'm scared of messing with: belts. The timing belt has to be replaced soon anyways, so maybe I'll hold out till then (if that is the cause of the leak).
