isn't the 35r the best turbo for 285whp-600whp?

no risk of blowing your motor here
where would you start...question of the decade.

eh...a 2860 is no where close to a 35r in size. you're comparing a 35lb wheel to a 65lb wheel.

Kinda what I was thinking, with the exception of your post... these replies have me baffled mostly as to how they relate to the op's question of a cheaper alternative that a close equal to a gt35r.

So along those lines... I will add my 2 cents to this... maybe consider the much cheaper journal bearing gt35 or a sc61 from precision as a good runner up alternative.

sc61 is the closest, aka t3/gt40 blowzilla. both use the gt35r compressor wheel

Comparing the sc6152s ("S" cover) and the t3 Blowzilla, there are two little items I'm not sure of and maybe someone on here can clear up:

1) Do these both run the GT4082 compressor wheel, or does one or both run the GT3582 wheel? The maps are a significantly different on the Garrett site, but it seems like some people imply that they are the same wheel. . . . ?

2) On the exhaust side, I'm not sure which wheel either one of these turbos use. . . Seems like the sc61 might be a t3 "Stage 5" wheel, and the t3 Blowzilla uses a t3 Stage 3, Stage 5, something else? ? ?

Along similar lines, I see mention of the GT35e here and there but I can't find any solid information. What I've seen implies that this is just a journal bearing version of the GT35R, but I don't see it on Garrett's list, or anywhere else really.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Thad

garrett doesnt make the gt35e.....

the blowzilla comes in a stage 3 wheel, but can easily be fitted with a stage 5 wheel.

the "gt40" wheel is the wheel the gt3582r runs

Thanks Mike, maybe you can alleviate my confusion a little more. . .

On the Garrett site, they show this compressor map for the GT35R (3582):

And they show this compressor map for the GT4082:

Clearly they are very different maps. . . . I'm lost on the whole thing, because people sure seem to consider them to be the same. This makes me wonder what compressor wheel is actually in an sc61, or a Blowzilla. . . .

I found this explanation of some of the nuances between the sc6152 and Precision's version of the journal bearing GT35R that seems pretty credible on the DSM Tampa forum:

"Quote:
Another turbo (for a higher bling factor ) to consider along with the SC6152S, might be the Precision GT3561. The GT3561 is the same as the SC6152, but in lieu of the T350 turbine wheel, the GT3561 uses a GT35 turbine wheel. The GT35 turbine is slightly smaller on the inducer at 2.68" vs 2.80" for the T350. The exducers on both wheels are right about 2.4X". (I believe the GT35 is 2.44" and the T350 is 2.41"). Precision told me that I probably wouldnt see a difference between the two wheels in practical application (i.e. theyd spool the same, etc). In theory, the GT35 is supposed to flow better up top but I dont have any experience one way or the other. I stayed with the T350 wheel as it was $100-$150 cheaper if memory serves.

Martin at AMS tested the sc61 (stage5 turbine) back to back against the gt35 (same gt40 compressor, gt35 turbine, plain bearing) the gt35 made 10whp and spooled 100rpm faster. the evo8 was at the 550 whp range at the time.
this is why everyone is using the the bb gt35r in their kits. awesome turbo. when we installed the 35r on brittans 2.0, I have never seen a boost needle move so fast from 10-25psi."

Thanks again!

the 4082 uses a 58mm inducer on the compressor side. so although they are both 82mm on the exducer they are different compressor wheels.

seems like most the discussion in that post is about the turbine wheel differences among the sc61's

I was goig to mention the GT3561E which is a nonball bearing GT35R, has same turbine and compressor wheels just no BB

I can get them from Precision Turbo

EDIT: Sorry another turbo that Precision no longer makes Then the SC61 is the way to go

Yeah, most of the discussion there is about the turbine, but that was one part of what was confusing me.

I'm still confused about this compressor wheel issue though. . . The GT35R has a different compressor wheel than the GT40s do, SO, it would seem that the SC61 has the same wheel as the GT35R. Does that mean that the t3 Blowzilla has that same wheel, or does it really have the GT4082 compressor wheel?

EDIT: Okay, on Cheapturbos.com, I see that for the "T3/GT40 Blowzilla" it says "same compressor section as the GT35R." Still makes me wonder why they call it "GT40" anything, but at least I am satisfied that for ALL of the turbos in question in this thread, the appropriate map to look at above is the one for the GT3582!

what about the 3076r w/ the .82 housing? a little less laggy than the 35r, and is still capable of 550+ whp

i think jeff evans did a comparison between the the 35r .63 housing and the the 30r .82 a while back.

Anyone know where to find this, or what Jeff's screen name is for a search?

put yer lips up to the intake mani and blow.
it'll be dirt cheap, and i'll bet you'll make way more power than a gt35r@30psi.

lol jp, bro.

sc61 ftw.

just registered. i'm here looking for turbos too. funny i should find you and jason here.

Is Ball Bearing vs Friction bearing actually worth the extra $$? I have heard it spools a tiny bit faster but thats about it. Is the longevity the same? or close to? HP available the same? Efficiency?
