Main't Required Light & General 95k mile maint question
Hey,
I bought my 2000 honda accord about 2 months ago, with 92.Xk miles. It is not at 94.5k miles and the main't required light flashes about 10 times then turns off whenever i turn the car on. Does anyone know what this means? Second thing, I think I'm due for a good tune-up, what is recommended to change/tune-up at this time? (I havent done ANY maintenance on the car yet, eg oil change etc..)
Thanks a bunch

The maintenance required light is set off by mileage, not by any particular problem. I think it has to do with emissions standards. Anyway, I believe that after 3 or 4 thousand miles it blinks when you start the car, and after 6k it stays on all the time. To turn off the maintenance required light, put the key in the ignition, and hold down the trip odometer reset button as you turn the key to on.
Also, has the timing belt been changed yet? It's about that time (105k or 7 years).

The maintenance required light is just a reminder light, it starts flashing at something like 6,000 miles from the last reset, and stays on constantly at 7,500 miles from the last reset. To reset it… do you have your owner’s manual? All of this information is in there. Anyway, as I remember, to reset it just press in your trip reset button while the key is in the ignition but turned to “off”. Keep holding in the button and turn the key to the “on” position (not start, but just before it), after about ten seconds or so the light will go off.
Regarding maintenance, you really need to just do all of the maintenance items on it, start from zero. Start here: http://www.handa-accessories.com/accmaint00.html
Pick up the six oil filters for $26.64. Also get the six crush washers ($0.96), a new oil pan drain plug ($1.01), an engine air filter ($18.58), two cabin filters (“Micron Air brand Pollen Filters”) $9.50 each (you need two), and if your windows are running a little slow pick up a tube of Shin-Etzu grease ($11.89). This site is located in California so there’s no tax for you though you’ll be paying something in shipping. You can pick up some of these things at your local auto parts store of course, but might as well use Honda parts when you can.
Change the oil yourself (easy on this car), I personally use Castrol GTX. Change the engine filter and the two cabin filters, and the spark plugs / wires while you’re at it. I believe on the 2000 the recommended spark plug change interval is 105,000 miles. Just change them, they are right there and easy to do – besides it’s 105,000 miles or 72 months and it’s been 72 months.
Also change the engine coolant, transmission fluid, and brake fluid. And read your owner’s manual if you still have it.
At 105,000 miles / 7 year, under normal conditions, you are also supposed to have the valve clearance inspected, replace the timing belt , balancer belt (if I4), and inspect the water pump.

Wow, I'm greatly indebted to you for your vastly informative answer. I bought the car and it came with no manual so I have to resort to online resources.. Thanks a lot for the info and the link
