built b17 or b20 vtec?
ok guys ive come across some sk2 stg2 cams cam gears and springs for such a good price you would think this honda guru fell in love with crack. so this puts me in a spot now that i buy them they are not benificial to my stock b17. so here is the problem i can spend the money on rebuilding my b17 (he also has polished ctr pistons for sooo cheap) or i buy a b20 ether way im buying the cams, gears ect. and a camp1320 tri-y. but if i build the b17 and add some bolt-ons i will only make close to 170 with stock head correct? i dont have very much downtime or big head port money. i think i could make much more power with the b20 block. help me decide, im losing sleep. thanx.
b17a because it can rev more and it rare and b20 walls are thin. They don't last too long unless they are sleeved although a b20 would make mad tg and whp over a b17a if built right.

noobs. id much rather keep the b17, actually thats what ive done. You may not get the tq or quite the power but you get a more reliable, higher revving with out the cost of (chance) of cracking the b20. plus its the o.g of vtec engines. lol
i say keep the b17 spend the extra money and get the bottom end balance and throw some p30s in there. and you could always shave the head and block for the extra bump in compressin.

im not much of a noob ive been in this game for quite some time im just trying to decide on the best bang for my buck. i dont want to spend over 2gs for 170 at the wheels. i want at least 190 at the wheel and like i said before if i did build the b17 he has ctr polished pistons for cheap. that would bump compression up enough i would have to run at least a .0030 headgasket.

just make sure you have a good tune and youll be set.

thats what i just finished doing to mine. p30s balanced bottom end, milled head and block 30thousanths. but i have a 99b16 head with .5 os valves. havent started it yet waiting for my dizzy to come in. and no really sure which cams to go with.
i just like the b17, its not the fastest but its a well built engine, and more reliable.
thats why you always see people drive there stock gsr's with 250k all original.

people just dont appreciate the older things anymore, all they want is speed, which is good but not always the most reliable, especially sense most the people trying to build these 300whp n/a b16's are like 16, 17. lol i just turnd 18.

i sold the crx and kept the b17a
Didn't want to let it go. After i get the motor rebuild i'm putting it in my DD ej1. Hoping to make over 180 whp and 120 tq.

i say b20/vtec. no the cylinder walls wont crack. if it built correctly it will run correctly. and by the way xD**ktonesx is no idiot or noob. his post count might only be 20 but hes a former user here that is very knowledgeable with lots of good info. now u tell me would u rather be the guy with the b17 with cams, valvetrain, higher compression, etc, etc. gettin ur *** kicked by a guy with a near stock b20/vtec or would u rather be the guy in the b20vtec? ive got a fairly stock b20/vtec DA and my buddy with his 92 gsr with the same setup ur looking to do couldnt even think about keeping up with me. just my .02

I wasnt even looking at his post b/c that has clearly nothing to do with anything. I never said anything about racing if you actually read what i posted. Its clearly talking about keeping the o.g engine complete in the car. Yes a nearly stock b20/vtec may be faster and if thats what he wants then go for i was more talkin about originality. Especially if he's on a budget. Id much rather see a built b17, more than a b20/vtec.
And yes i would rather be the guy that gets beat by a b20/vtec. woopdy doo. But i guess thats why ive beat plenty of ls/b20 vtecs. on a mild built b17. so sure if they can beat me congrats on that. aint nothin special.

yea those were the cams i was looking into also. might get some rockets also. just not really sure yet. plus my funds are kinda low. lol
yeah m22x sounds good too. And b20powereDA i don't think anyone mentioned anything about a b17a smoking a b20. Your right i would not want to be the guy with the b17a not even the b20 if your going all out racing. Just give me the k20a in a crx and i'll smoke both of them

i think im gonna go with the b17 build, i might try to save up a little more buy a blank head and have it angled and polished. i can see myself getting another job over this. either way im gonna scoop my new cams gears and springs in the next few days. when i do this build would it be worth documenting? would you homies be interested in a b17 build up w/ pics?

yea man i would be very interested in a build thread. im kinda mad i didnt do it for mine. i have pics of bare block to complete thats all. lol but i guess i dont see a need to get a bunch of descriptive pics.
