To check your balljoints and tierods leave the wheel on the car and raise it off the ground.
Grab the tire with one hand at the 12 o'clock position and one at 6 o'clock. Push with your top hand and pull with your bottom hand with short, firm movements. If you feel/see movement other than the tire moving your upper or lower balljoint could be bad. Have a friend do it while you watch the ball joints closely. The joints should not look like they are moving inside the boots. If you feel/see movement, replace them. This test will also show if any control arm bushings are sloppy or broken. Be sure there is no movement coming from the center of the wheel at the hub. If you do you may have a bad wheel bearing, although you would likely hear a roaring noise while driving before a thumping.
To check the tie rod ends grab the tire at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions. Push with your left hand and pull with your right hand with short firm movements. The wheel may move a little with the rack, and this is normal, but if you see or feel movement like that described for a bad ball joint, you will need a new tie rod end.
You could also have a broken sway bar endlink. Check to see if the endlinks are broken, bent, or missing bushings or hardware. If so, replace them too.

If you lowered your high mileage car without clocking your bushings, those might be torn now.
Plus, lowering puts a lot of stress on the upper ball joints. So this might also be the problem.
Do the shake test that the guy above this post suggested.
Check your bushings for tears or cracks.
Is this a DA or DC? The DA has tension rods. Those would make noise if the bushings were bad in the front crossmember.
