Default Worth It or Not Worth It

Just wondering what people's thoughts are about my situation. Basically is it worth it to spend $3000 on a new tranny and clutch? Here is my situation:

1999 Prelude SH - 175K

I still owe $4000 on my loan. Am I correct in assuming I could maybe get around $7000 or higher from private party sales? I know there is a following out there for this vehicle in good condition, and mine is. Pearl white - paint is great - no rust, etc. ATTS works fine, drivability and performance feel like day 1.

Thanks everyone!

You are planning on spending 3K on a tranny and clutch? If you are just going to throw money away, atleast throw it at me. Having the tranny and clutch done won't cost near that much. However as per kbb in my area you can get between 6500-8100 for your lude but check the market near you see what they are selling for that will ultimately determine your price. IMO if the car is in such great shape other than the two problem areas, fix the problems and keep it.

I guess I'm just weighing different options but believe me I would rather keep driving it until it dies. I love my car!!! As far as the $3k I am just estimating. A brand new tranny from Honda is $1888 and then clutch and labor should bring it close to $3000. That sounds right doesn't it?

Well buying a brand new anything from honda will be super expensive, 1888 for a tranny from honda costs as much as almost an entire H22a swap with a tranny, so search first you can probably get a nice low mileage one for 400-600, as for the clutch buy an aftermacket replacement one for 200-300 that saves you a bundle right there.

Even if you bought the tranny from Honda, and a new clutch for 2-300, labor on a clutch job is usually like 3-400, and all thats different here would be take out one tranny put in one other.

Of course it is an SH and they suck to do this work on so it would probably cost more lol.

honda charges 200% markup on anything and close to 100 in labour an hour. Are you that rich dude? You could take the course on being a mechanic for 3000$ Practically speaking!* even online for cheaper probably*

Buy the parts yourself, and DIY with some help off H-T. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty, or to read a bit.

Its one thing to make alot of money but its another to be able to save money.

175k miles. hard to sell even w/ new stuff just cuz the buyer will think he cant sell it if the day were ever to come. 150k and above in cali are like 5k asking price.

If you try and sell the car w/ the "messed up" tranny to someone for $7k w/ 175k and don't tell them, you are looking at a lawsuit for not disclosing it. Now if you tell them it is messed up, there is no way you are going to get $7k for a Prelude w/ 175k miles on it and a tranny that could cost upwards of $3k to fix.

it's an SH so manual transmission - I refuse to believe the entire transmission is messed up unless you ran it with no fluid in and upset literally every component

After thinking long and hard I have a difficult time believing that it is my transmission that is bad. This morning my clutch finally went out almost completely but I am still able to drive without it. I just match RPMs and speed and can throw it into any gear.

Would this be an indication that just my clutch is bad? Also I saw a post above about getting a new engine and tranny for $1700. Where in the world can I get one that cheap?? Also I would love to do a Type-S H22A swap and am wondering if the ECU or anything else needs to be changed to compensate the added horsepower. The cheapest I saw for that was $3900.

i am going to give advice that nobody seems to be doing. Pay your loan off. I kept doing the same thing with my car. I now have an extremely nice 4th gen (pictures to come this week) but i now have 3 months to get out of 7k of debt or there is a huge possiblity my car is going to be up for sale. 4k left on your loan, pay off the loan and just enjoy owning a debt free car. As for your issues, i remember reading your thread and it does not seem like it has anything to do with your transmission.

I had a problem with mine, it kept grinding in second. Every mechanic and person i talked to said it was my snycros. Well eventually there was no second gear left... or thats what i thought. I swapped the tranny and while doing so i realized there was absolutly no clutch fluid what so ever. Just enough to give a little pedal pressure and allow my car to go into gear at low rpms. We cracked the tranny open and sure enough everything was intact. Cost me 1000 dollars for the new clutch and tranny just to realize nobody had even bothered to check the clutch fluid.

Your problems sound like you have some serious problems with your clutch system. Take your transmission off and install the new clutch. IF it still hasn't fixed it drive like that for a few more months i guess (debt free of course) and save to fix it. Its good advice to get you out of debt, bad advice i guess becasue you are scarficing your car. It just sounds like you don't need a transmission.

I sincerely appreciate your advice and absolutely agree that it's not my tranny (at least that's what keeps me happy telling myself that). By the way how were you able to do a clutch and tranny for only $1000?

Oh and I did check the fluid and it's fine. But you're right, it just doesn't sound like a tranny problem...

i bought a clutch kit and flywheel for 400 and i lucked out on the tranny. a guy in my city had an old m2y4 tranny kicking around from his lude that he sold and was asking 1200 for it. I told him i would give 500, he said ok since he had it for 1/2 a year and nobody offered him anything. had the receipt from the company he bought it from as well. 1200 bucks is what he paid. 40k on it.

You can find the m2b4 trannies on here for about 600. If you don't know those have the lsd in them. I couldn't find one in my city. Trannys are really hard to expletive up if your cars power is not that much and if you know how to shift and drive. Most people assume there tranny is what is going when its just part of the drivetrain that is actually going.
