OT: Is a Corvair a favorable car? I can get one for pennies!!
Hey guys ...... I wanted your opinion on this deal that was proposed to me.
Its a 65 Corvair with a newly built motor and trans ..... but its was redone 15 years ago and driven for only a few hundred miles before it was stored. It has been sitting in this guy's driveway (covered) since then.
Its got a 2 speed automatic !! I gotta see this.
The deal is simple ...... its free! I saw some rust on the rear fender but all looks to be in decent shape. He hasn't started it but he assures me that it was drained and stored properly.
I had thoughts about converting it into a track car but I don't know the history of the Corvair on the track. I can also drop a chevy small block and make it into a drag car!!! That would be nice.
What you opinion guys??

The Corvair is becomming sort of rare these days. I know there are people out here on the west coast that still pay decent money for a car in good shape. Heck, they even buy crappy ones for parts.
I don't know alot of specifics, but a car in running condition, for free, is a good deal any day of the week!

Corvairs were never favorable but if it's basically free, why the hell not! Buy a good fire extinguisher nad you might live. They're pieces of ****! Go for it
The placement of the gas tanks on the corvair also causes it to leak gas and some times explode from almost any kind of impact...
But if you are draging it, just get a fuel box thingy and be done with it.

If it is a monza I'd say jump on it asap, 6 cylinder and a turbo, but other then that kinda cool, pretty rare these days so if its free why the hell not if oyu want to sell it you could always sell it and take the money and put it into your R

Fix it up and go to the classic car shows!!!!!!!! I would love to own any classic vehicle from abck in the day. its all about pimp factor and the older cars can out pimp anythign from today. Benz? BMW? Bently? All fail in comparison to tan old Buick, Benz, Rolls, Bellair or any opld cruiser. Way pimper to have and old one than a new one.
I have heard that they are a handling nightmare. The rear mounted engine makes them very very prone to oversteering. Infact so prone, that you have to keep the tires at really odd airpressures to keep the car planted in corners.
But it's a free car. Buy it, respray it, clean it up, then sell it for a few grand!
Cheese~

Its a monza but I don't think it has a turbo. It has the 140hp motor.
Here is what the car looks like. (color is the same but not condition)

I'm going to see if it starts this Sunday. I've got many years to work with this.

Free = jump on that like a horny cheerleader on prom nite.
Spend a few bucks on it here and there, before long, someone will stop you and offer to buy it. Happens all the time with my Scout. Er, when she's running

My aunt had one from new and kept it 20 years... She swore by the car and hated Ralph Nader for testing the car and calling it a death trap... She say's he was trying to make a name for himself and to do it he publicly trashed some pretty good cars, inc her Corvair... The Corvair never got over the bad rap...
Have fun man.. and a small block Chev will fit in the back just fine if you want more go!

The Corvair's handling woes owe more to its swing axle rear suspension than the rear engine placement (however, the rear-mounted engine exaggerated the problem). Essentially, the car could be induced to flip without much in the way of warning should its limits be exceeded.
I'd still take it though. Corvairs are cool.
