Default ACT clutch installed for 3,000 miles... Transmission blows... Coincidence?

I'm almost certain my ACT clutch is behind my transmission's catastrophic failure. The transmission has always been a bit noisey, but after the new clutch combination was installed (ACT HD pressure plate/ACT unsprung 6-puck), the transmission got much louder immediately following the install, and a few nights ago after a spirited drive (1st-3rd gear pull, didn't even turn the tires over in any gear, stock motor mounts, I wasn't pushing it), the transmission started getting louder, and louder and progressively louder. Until today, it COMPLETELY LET GO. The transmission is completely destroyed, I cannot move it anymore.

So, is simply coincidence that after only 3,000 miles of this new clutch combination being installed, that my perfectly maintained, recently rebuilt transmission TOOK A MASSIVE **** ON ITSELF? I think not. I had heard MANY rumors that ACT is behind many transmission failures, and now, they can add yet another to their list of "satisfied" customers.

ACT =

Going back to a stock disc, brand new transmission and abondoning any plans I had for the car. I'm done with this game.

Damn, sorry to hear man. A brand new tranny will be great though, showroom smooth and quiet again.

Can't go wrong with OEM clutch

I vote coincidence.

I have used ACT in the past without any issues. Furthermore, I am unware of issues that people may be having with ACT clutches.

Good luck with the tranny.

If said trans had problems before the ACT clutch install (noises and such) I'd be willing to bet that the new clutch, with I'll presume more bitting force, helped the existing condition get worse.

You've been talking about it getting progressively worse. I bet the problem has been there all along and was never adressed properly.

I am going from my experience, or experiences I know of firsthand.

I am not the type to read and form opinions upon what someone says on HT. How do I know how they drive/abuse it or if they really installed something right. BTW, stock disc springs are prone to come loose/break also.

I might look into who rebuilt your tranny too in this case.

The Acura dealership did the rebuild, and my mechanics (Who are certified Acura technitians, who work at the same dealership) did the install, and all work pertaining to the car. It was done right.

The noise never got louder until the new clutch was installed. Which leads me to believe that the clamp load (Like Dave said), probably just set the problem off, that the previous stock slipping clutch left alone.

Ticking time bomb, if you will.

Maybe ACT's clutch wasn't at fault, maybe it was. Not sure. I may have jumped the gun by automatically blaming ACT for my misfortune, I was quite upset.

But one thing's for sure, I'm out over $2,000.

IMO, chalk this up as a horrible learning experience. But don't let that deter you from doing what you wanted in the future to the car.

No, the rebuild was done correctly. I'm willing to put my car's title on it.

But, I'm not messing with it again. I'll have it cracked open to see what broke (Obviously, it's not going to be hard to notice), and sell it as is to someone who has the means to fix it, and use it.

I'm just buying brand new. Which will put my plans for the car on hold for yet ANOTHER year, but oh well, sometimes life kicks you in the nuts and laughs... But I'm not dead, and I'm not in prison, so it's not so bad.

Unsprung clutch in a street car, I have seen them fry a few trannys.

I don't understand why... I was fine driving it, I had it engaging as smooth as a stock disc, and I honestly hadn't been killing it hard (i.e Ripping gears).

I don't know what to think.

I have a 6puck unsprung ACT system in my transmission and have had no problems. But of course I shift like a granny too.

See, that's what's crazy... I haven't been ripping gears, since I still have stock motor mounts... The transmission just let go after beating on it (Not even chirping the tires) for 3 gears. That's not right.

it may be coincidence.

an unsprung clutch will eat the center of itself out before anything bad happens usually.

i am willing to bet your final drive blew up and/ or there's still a bad (now exploded) bearing in your tranny. do a post mortem before jumping to conclusions.

it's also possible that the pressure plate or clutch disc just let go.....

well just to make you feel little better..
i did my motor rebuild last summer. 2006.
car was still burning oil even before rebuild too but after rebuild it's burning even more.
i think my piston rings are gone or something is leaking in the head.
now i almost need another rebuild after driving less than 10,000 kms
and yes. car is expensive as hell.
i wish i could have saved all the money i spent on my car and get me a lotus elise and keep her stock so nothing goes wrong.
i realized the more you mod your car the more problem = more headake. and dent in your wallet.
i sometime hate cars

That's what my mechanic's thinking, if this is the case, he said he has a stock 4.400FD that he'll let me have. My bearings are all brand new, although I'm not sure if the input shaft bearing was replaced, that might have let loose.

As for the clutch being gone, I don't think so, the car still goes into gear just fine while the engine's on, it's just rough as **** while engaged. It's an obvious transmission problem, I don't think it's the clutch.

^ I'll keep in touch with you. Everyone's pretty sure it's a final drive problem (Makes perfect sense), so if that's the only problem *crosses fingers*, it'll be an easy fix.

If not, I'm dropping the dime on a brand new one.
