Default Final Drive - Tranny info.

So i found some info on our trannies (thanks to the H-T search function) and was wondering what difference it makes that we have a 4.7 final drive as opposed to the 5. I understand the longer the gear the higher the top speed, but in the end isnt that just because the typical 5.0 k tranny is in the type R which has more power to push it anyways? I mean in sixth gear my car barely holds up 130mph. 5th can get it over that, but not by much.

Is changing tranny gears just for when you are pushing hardcore power. And if you do change gears as you get more power, we would definately need a new first wouldnt we because hell lets face it, first is nearly useless as it is.

I think you are right about the 5.0 being in Type R because of the higher power output, and first would most likely be trash in a stock Si with a 5.0 trans.

well surely the 5.0 has a longer final drive (i will have to look at my reference again) because of the higher power. The first gear in a stock SI is pretty much a waste of a shift anyways, if you are rolling at all you dont even need it. it just gets me from 0 to 5mph before i shift (unless im racing or stomping on it, but even still, only gets me to like 20.
