I've been a traitor for almost a year now. What I've been up to.
Hey guys, I've missed H-T for awhile now & hope you all miss me, j/k. Some of you may remember me & my wealth of parts that I always seemed to have on hand. If any of you live in Utah a need help with an engine swap & wiring lmk. I'm always ready to help.
Anyways, I decided I wanted something RWD & can't afford a S2000 & AE86's are so trendy so I got the next best thing, a Datsun 510. I love to swap engines so I'm preparing to pull the KA24DE out (now that it's running well) & drop in VQ35DE in it from a 350z/G35.
Check it out on CarDomain at: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2647414
I'm trying to get on the next season of Bullrun, so vote for me.

Datsun 510s can be competitive. in GRM a few months back there was a guy that restored a 510, painted it bright orange and put in a (insert engine code) V6 from a Nissan 300Z. It was RWD with a few hundred hp and looked really really nice. Total sleeper.
I sold out too and got a RWD too (albeit Honda powered) but I still have the Prelude.
Now. You broke the forum rules so

I was trying to think of a way to make this a "technical" thread, but it's hard to be technical when I'm basically saying how's it going guys/gals?
When I do the swap, I can add how I do it to make the thread more technical. By the way the 300zx engine is a VG30DE (there's some technical info). There are a fair # of VG30 swapped 510's, but no VQ's that I know of yet. It will fit, but there might be a little bit of hood clearance issues (much like I experienced when I put the H23A into my EF hatch).

now maybe i could see if you were swaping a honda motor in then it would fit in here. LOL , i have always loved the 510s as well. I had fallen in love with a 510 that had a 13b in it, turbocharged , all customer jaguar rear end. they are great cars..
eh welcome back sort of ?

I did consider swapping an F20C or F22C into it, but figured I should stick with the Nissan engines. Besides, if you could swap a 287hp 274ftlb (stock) V6 into your prelude without too much difficulty I think you'd do it too, rather than an F20C or K series.
If I need help I'll be sure to hit you up Chris, thanks man.

F20/F22C is too small for a RWD car that's more than 2000# anyway. With RWD you can actually make use of excessive V6 torque given grippy tires.
A long time ago I drooled over a turboed 20B for some undefined platform. It was mostly the packaging I loved. The wankels are so small plus the really high exhaust pressure.
2lude4u you should post pics of the 510. It'd be nice to see. (sorry too lazy to go to cardomain) Besides everyone likes pictures.

What does a VQ35 go for? I personally hate the motors after what my friend went through with his 350Z. It was burning 1qt/2-300 miles when the car was at 5000 miles. Nissan obviously swapped another motor into it under warranty but they were never(or didn't want to)able to tell him why it happened.
I would be all over a 3.2-3.5 liter swap into a Prelude if it was very straight forward. Instead I am just going to wait on a used 07 TLS in the future....
I personally don't understand the RWD hype. I get my FWD rotating just fine. Oversteer is the problem now......its been years since understeer has plagued my track experience.

The 2006 "Rev-up" engines have oil consumption problems but other years are fine. It is unfortuntate & Nissan has not done a good/professional job of handling the issue. Other than finally swapping engines for those that complain enough & go through certain steps. Some of the swapped engines end up having the same problems.
Some one locally has a 2006 (non-revup) because it was in an Auto trans G35 that I'm planning on getting for $2500 & it includes all the "small" stuff I need for the swap, except a 6spd which will cost around $600-$1000.
I'll post up some pics shortly.

IIRC he had a 2005. whats a REV UP? engine?

I would guess this has to do with the ECU/Shifting.

I think the 2005 Track models got the Rev-up engine as well.
The Rev-up is a VQ engine with variable timing on both intake & exhaust sides (2004-05 engines just have it on the intake side) & has a 500 rpm higher redline than the others. It's the precursor (that had some apparent hiccups) to the new 2007 VQ35HR engine which is a beauty, with has much stronger internals, higher rpm, more torque down low & up high, etc.
Yeah the auto cars just has a different tune & possibly slightly different cams, so tuning & other mods will give it as much power as I can get out of it.

Wow, I didn't realize you were quite the coinsurer.
I had to spell check that word BTW. I still don't think it's right. LOL! I guess you got a thing for obscure engines/abnormal motor swaps.

perhaps you should take a look at this project, and if you have questions direct them his way : https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/2018136 granted its not a 510 though..

coinsurer has to do with insurance....
What would someone do with a 300hp 510? Are you planning to TUB it for 15" wide tires? I can't even imagine driving that thing......

Lots of fun *** stuff....lol.I would be at the local 1/4 mile trying to hook that power to the ground.....or out burning through tires, and knocking down orange cones in a parking lot.
Have fun
Ive always been interested in one of those also....hmmmm.

It's in fairly good shape, but has it's share of rust, mainly the floorpans.
I'm not going to tub it, but I will be modifying the Rear LCA's so there is more room to move the wheels inward & fit a wider profile tire on the rims (there is room, just the LCA arm gets in the way). If that proves to not get me as wide a profile as needed I may have to put on some fender flares. I'd like to avoid that if possible & leave the fenders stock.
Yeah, I guess I like to do less common swaps & I'm no connoisseur, I just do a lot of research before I really get my feet wet.
