Default budget intake help

I have a 1988 CRX DX, and I wanted to know if any of you have done these mod to your intake. I put a K&N panel filter and ripped out the rubber tubing leading to the box. This sounds better, and probably does a slight performance increase. Next, I took the cover off, between the rubber tubing and the intake manifold. I saw this bent little piece of metal that was really restricting airflow, so i took it out. was this a wise thing?
Any other suggestions, or help would be appreciated. I am soloing the car, and can't do anything major to the intake. thanks

ive heard of people using muffler pipe with a filter on it .. but ive done the first thig your talking about has nice CAI sound but you always going to get a intake eventually since people will probably poke fun at ya! but hey it works for now and it has that "sleeper" look that people like so go for it till you hit lottery and then just get a CAI .. cool later
