What size tires should I get?
The proper size depends on your car, not just the wheels you are using.
For a CRX, del sol, or pre-'96 Civic, the following sizes are usually best:
13" - 175/70-13
14" - 185/60-14, 195/55-14
15" - 195/50-15
16" - 205/40-16
For an Integra or '97-00 Civic, the following sizes are usually best:
14" - 185/65-14, 195/60-14
15" - 195/55/15, 205/50-15
16" - 205/45-16, 215/45-16
17" - 205/40/17
This is open for discussion and by no means what you have to get, but as a general rule you cannot go wrong with these sizes.

So y isn't 215/45/17 a proper size for my model Civic? Will it rub the wall or something? it seems like it would but thats the only thing I'm worried about is rubbing.
btw I got a 1997 Honda Civic LX its a 4dr with stock suspension.

Chance are it will rub, the speedo will be off, and your acceleration will suffer. Why do you want to get such a large tire anyways?
You also have to start considering what size rims are these tires going on.

Well there goin on 17's and the reason y I want bigger tires is cause the gap space between my tire and my fender is just not goin with the look. I got a body kit and I dont wanna lower my car so i'd rather just get thicker tires. The 205/40/17 is just too thin and doesnt go with it. But anyway do u know from experience of this size tire into a Honda Civic 4dr? just wanna know...
old man neri is giving you good advice. Don't create problems for yourself by using the wrong tire size. Stick with the proper tire size for your car. With 17" wheels on a '97 Civic, that's 205/40-17.
If you don't like the way it looks and you want the look of bigger tires, then trade your car in for a different car, one that uses bigger tires, like a newer Civic. For example, 215/45-17 is a good size for a 2001 or later Civic. Maybe that's what your idiot "someone" was thinking of when he gave you that bad advice.

I guess 215/45/17 wont fit correctly but I went to a tire shop and ask one of the guys who deals with tires what would fit best besides 205/40/17 and he said 205/45/17 would work because all I need is the wall height of the tire if thats what I wanted. I hope he's right but Im just double checking if you guys have any sugesstions. thx

205/45-17 is too big also.
You need to get tires whose outer diameter is the same as stock, to avoid the problems that old man neri mentioned. That size is 205/40-17.
Stick with 205/40-17.
