Changing the Engine timming ?
Hello,
I searched everywhere but couldn't find an answer.
What does Advancing your timming do and retarding your timming do on your distributor.
I've heard people advance there timming by 2' and get a bit faster response but its bad on there top end. Some people say retarding the timming helps the car overall....
Can someone explain to me what your changing when you adjust the timming and is there any gains in changing it?
(I figured this when my friend had his ex advanced by 4 degrees and put it back and he gained lots of gas millage)

basically you answered your question. if you advance timing you gain low end but lose top end and vice versa. should also help on gas mileage if its a little retard. someone correct me if im wrong please.
Yes the motor is Stock.
Just have Short Ram intake rest is stock.
So Retarding the timming will increase compression?
Since the piston has more time to compress the air/gas mixture before explosion?

When you talk about adjusting the distributor thats ignition timing. There should really be no reason to touch that on a stock motor. Now when people say they advance or retard by x amount of degrees they are most likley talikng about cam timing. On a single cam motor you can only advance or retard on a dual cam you can advance one retard one whatever makes you more power. I wouldnt suggest doing any kinds of timing adjustments to a stock motor. If you must though each tooth on a stock cam gear is +/- 2 degrees. Have fun.
Your factory ignition and timing is set at a certain point for a reason.
Its only when you get into high horsepower, compression or boost that you need to start messing with it.

I would not suggest adding timing to make the car faster, Honda's have a lot of timing as it is, at part throttle cruise it will easily get into the 40 degree area, and at WOT it should drop about 10-12 of timing. This is one of the reasons Honda's get good gas mileage, high timing in the driving area. I would suggest leaving it at stock timing unless your doing something insane like nitrous or boost..

All motor builds require timing adjustments as well.
