My car over heats when I'm at a stop and go traffic. It only happens when I drive maybe like a 5 - 10 min drive on the freeway then go from light to light and it starts to heat up. Then if I drive constantly it drops back down.

I changed the thermostat and temp sensor and fan switch. What could it be now??

 

how old is your radiator?

 

any visible leaks? Try a cooling system pressure test.

 

check your coolant levels, friends car did this, he was low on coolant.

Ive had the same radiator when ever since.

Theres pressure on the hoses that lead to the radiator and I dont see any leaks.

It has enough coolant, but maybe Ill check it over again just in case.

Also its a d16z6 in a cx.

 

could be a bad headgasket

 

check head gasket, my sister in laws car did the same thing. they changed the gasket and that fixed it.

 

Aight ill try changing that asap.

 

You said you changed the fan switch, but did you check to make sure that the fan motor actually works and is coming on? When you're driving on the freeway, there's plenty of air passing through to keep the car cool, no need for the fan to turn on then...

got the same problem, i think its my headgasket. or jus try to replace the radiator cap. sometimes it gets old and doesnt hold enough pressure

 

make sure fans work first. start there.

 

TealHatch, is your car boosted? or n/a.

 

Car is NA and the fan does come on. Ima try picking up a new radiator cap first to see if that solves the problem then Ima change the head gasket if that doesnt work.

 

my car did this before i hard wired the fan to stay on at all times and it hasnt done that since...

 

could have a bad bearing in the water pump so dont count that out..if you are coming up on changing your timing belt id say do that and see what happens

pull out the senor on the thermosat and connect the two wires so ur fan stays on

Sounds like the radiator, or radiator fan. Are the fans going on? The cooling from driving is keeping it from overheating and when you stop the engine perks up to overheat. If it was the head or the water pump you would be experiencing more sever problems, more often. Just my .o2

I have the same problem... How hard is it to change the fan switch? I think it's my fan as I can never hear it come on...

 

fan goes on but i think it goes on too late

 

then hotwire the fan so its always on with the key, and drive around and see if it still overheats.
