Default 3M Tape for Masking Your Front End...

Hey guys, I've got a road trip coming up and I've seen a lot of people put the blue 3M painters tape on the front of their car. I was wondering: does this stuff leave any sticky residue on your bumper, or does it come off pretty good?

Also, should I use the green tape for car paint instead? I kinda wanted to use the blue just b/c it's more subtle on the EBP. Thanks!

??? Are you doing this to protect the front end from bugs/rocks? Painter's tape doesnt leave residue and comes off very easy and nicely. Obviously you DON'T wanna use duct tape though. If it's to protect the front end, I'd put on some sort of screen... I've seen em

Painter's tape is perfect for light protection from bugs and small rocks, and it is designed NOT to leave any of that sticky residue. The Mercedes dealership I used to work at uses it on new cars in any place that could possibly get nicked.

Now, if you want to go with much higher end protection, you can look into this stuff that the Mercedes' have sometimes, called clear armor. It's much more of a long term protection. It's like a car bra that is a clear plastic shell, applied to damage-prone parts of your car to protect the paint. Pricey, but worth it from what I've seen.

Hmm...are there any drawbacks to the "clear armor?" Like longterm paint fading, etc? I would assume not b/c MERCEDES uses it, but just wondering.

So the blue tape is fine, right? I'd rather use the blue than the green for the more subtle look, but if the green is better against the paint, I'll use it.

The blue is fine. I use the green for really delicate masking jobs where I have to do complicated things.

You'll be fine sticking to the blue.

As far as drawbacks, I don't think there are any, since the look of a Mercedes is very important to the customers, but look into it if you want. It's good stuff, you can't even see it until you get very close up. If you take a close look at some higher end cars, you'll see some of this stuff on the front ends, and behind the wheels, where rocks would get kicked up. I wanted some back in the day, but my paint isn't high enough quality for me to do that.

Damn... does anyone have pics of a car with this tape on it? To mee it looks like it would look really funny seeing a car with tape all over the front end. Then again, I'm picturing a really messy job in my head.

Infinity also sells the protective clear bra (vinyl?). A friend of mine had it on his G35, almost completely invisible unless you are looking for it.

Sweet! Thanks, bro. How much does the blue stuff usually run, anyway?

Dude, I'm trying to find you a good picture of the stuff, but in all the pictures I can barely see the ****. Here, just check out their site and look into the Gallery.

Normally $5-6/roll at home depot, its cheaper if it buy it multi-packs (which home depot sells) or at a paint shop.

One of my friends would use this 3M stuff for more permanent protection on his M3:
http://products3.3m.com/catalo..._html
It's a bit pricey, but it's 3M - which, in my limited experience, has the highest quality automotive finish products around. I also can't remember if he bought precut sections for his car if he cut the sections himself. Either way it was incredible how good it looked, he only did his front bummer and you could only see the film separation line if you were about 3 feet away from it, from any further back the film was totally invisible.
