Anyone getting knock w/ low grade gas on an H22?
Hey all - I have taken the premium prices for about as long as I can. I have been putting in 87 octane for the last few fill ups with no problems yet.
I'm wondering if I have just been lucky on the cheap stuff so far... Has anyone had any engine knock problems on 87?
*on a happy note, I took a trip down to Lake Powell last week which is about 300 miles one way. Cruising at about 85 most of the way and going about 20 miles through a winding mountain pass pretty aggressively I averaged just under 29 mpg for the trip.

I bought my uncle's '94 Si about two weeks ago, it was rebuilt at 78,000 and the car now has 161k on the clock. I found out yesterday he's been running 87 octane for the past 6 years since the rebuild. I need a valve adjustment badly, hopefully that is it. I'm going to continue running premium.

It's true. My car's previous owner used to fill up with mid-grade (89 octane) and so did I for a while. But if you think about it, it only costs a couple extra bucks a tank to run premium. Which is recommended.

i think we ALL feel you on the price of gas.... but there is a reason that the h22 REQUIRES premium.
please dont put crap in there and make your engine hurt

Im from the same area as the OP and I personally think the gas prices suck around here. however I have run my car on mid-grade to save a few bucks( right after I filled up my 33 gal bronco) and I could tell the difference and wont do it again.

If you really do the math, I mean how much more is it per tank to fill it with premium as opposed to 87? An extra 20 cents a gallon? So like an extra $2.40 a tank. Its worth the xtra paice of mind if anything. I have found that some vehicles get worse fuel mileage on crappy gas than on premium.
yup even here in chicago, where the gas station down the street from me is currently selling the CHEAP crap for 3.84 a gallon... still put in premium. 2-3 bucks extra is nothing...
yeah definitely read your owner's manual and even the sticker by the gas cap
91 or higher and like somebody else says, it's for a reason
i was thinkin' you put 89 in it once i saw your post, but 87... that's even worse
stick to what the owner's manual suggests, they know what they're doing

87 octane gas will do nothing to harm your injectors. Anyway, you can get by with 89 in an H23, but I wouldn't go below 91 on an H22. Lucky for me, the local gas station here sells 92 for the same price as 89 every Friday :D

Yeah forgot to mention mine's an Si. My uncle really must have filled out the "broke college student" thing running 87 in it. I'm running 93 now, because I can.
