Default HELP!!! Vtec problems!!!

so on my way to work this morning, i noticed that when i hit vtec, it will sputter or seem like its gonna back fire, seems like its at redline already!!! you know when you redline, the rpms drop back a little bit, seems like the motor is gonna blow? it does that when i hit vtec but it only happend like 6 out of 10 times i tried to engage vtec!

(example) im driving in third gear, i slowy get around vtec point (5800), i hit vtec, then the motor jolts pretty hard while my rpms gauge flys back and forth for a quick second from 5900 rpms to 4500rpms! this is when i release the gas as i am affraid its gonna blow! anybody knows what is the cause of this?

you don't slowly get into vtec. vtec requires a certain amount of load to kick in. don't be a girl, mash the throttle down and hold it to red line. you will love it.

when rpm start jumping all over the place in the upper rpm band it's more times than not the igniter. Good thing is you can just go to the local autoparts store and ask for the say 90 si igniter and it’s the same as the one used in the b16 and every other engine and a fraction of the price. I paid $35 for my last one and it’s still going strong that was two years ago. so check the igntier buddy

It wasn't the igniter on mine it was the cam position sensor inside the dizzy that was going bad. First, I woult check the connections and clean the plugs on the dizzy and see if it helps.

The igniter (a.k.a coil igniter), attaches to... your coil. Basically it's what sparks the whole thing.

A friend of mine had a problem similar to this in his 98 gsr. He was a quart low on oil, so we changed the oil and reset the ecu and it stopped doing it. So... you may try that.

hey everyone, here is an update! on my way to work, it started to do the same around 4000rpms! it happend about 4 times out of the whole 45min drive to work. I didnt get an oil change yesterday so im for sure doing it today, so now i figured it just not the vtec, might be something coming from the ignition maybe? thanks everyone for your help, at least we are getting somewhere, hopefully my motor doesnt blow before i can fix it!

I had the same exact problem. It was the ignitor. It seriously takes 2 minutes to replace. Just open up the dizzy and its mounted inside. Mark where the wires go, or draw a diagram because its not a harness just like four individuals wires with butt connectors.

Oh and make sure to smear a very thin layer or thermal grease on the two mating surfaces. The one i got at autozone was like 40 bucks and it came with a thing of grease.
