Default OT: New respect for Audi

I know racing on the street is stupid, and I usaully dont partake. BUT, last night they were calling for severe thunderstorms so i was in a hurry. SO i was driving out of DC on a road that is rarely congested, and last night it was empty. Anyway im driving, minding my business, when i see lights flying up on my rear bumper so i get over and its a new Audi A8 4.2 with some guy that was old enough to be my dad driving. To make a long story short we drove for about 30 miles going average 120mph. I was very impressed on the A8's acceleration and handling, it seemed to pull VERY hard at high speeds, and held tight on turns i assumed he would lose it on. I think their 0-60 is 6.7, but i didnt know they had top end power, anyone here ever drive one?

All those big luxury sedans have big power on the top end. They can probably cruise at 150mph all day long no problem.

And the frame is made from Alcoa Aluminium...I was working in Audi's hospitality tent for the American Le Mans race at Sears Point...they brought in an S8, $77,000 car...nice though.

yup, Audi A8 rocks. I think it weighs not as much as its competitors due to aforementioned aluminum body.

You drove an R 30 miles at 120 mph? R's aren't made for top-end cruising

Not being cocky or anything, but there aren't many cars that have beated my Integra on the street. Including my Uncle's 2000 Corvette(non-Z06).

So I was quite surprised when a pearl white S4 literally kicked the **** out of me.
Nothing flashy. Just a set of 17 or 18" gunmetal wheels and a small exhaust tip tucked under the bumper. I acknowledged his car with a , then he kinda inched his head forward as if saying "wanna run"?
We were going like 50-55mph, so he revved and me and dropped a gear. I dropped third gear, and since I have a 4.92 ATS final drive it put me right in my "sweet spot" of the power band. There was nothing I could do. By 80mph or so, he already had a solid 2 car lengths on me.
We went from a stoplight after that. Bad move. All wheel drive. He had a solid 1.5-2 cars on me by the time I shifted into second, and he kept pulling away.

Oh well.. I talked to the kid(yes KID, he was maybe 18) and he was surprisingly cool. He said "Wow, that Integra is fast. You were hanging for a while. I am used to pissing on every Honda around here."

Turns out this kid has an upgrade chip, exhaust, downpipes, and a couple other goodies. Somewhere in the 350hp ballpark.

Man, I want a S4. Too bad they are so expensive.

yeah, there is something cool about giant sedans that just haul ***...it's like a four-wheeled business jet. For a while my dad had a Mercedes S600, one of the giant bastards with the V12....It was stone quiet and just floated over everything, but he'd stomp the gas and you'd sink a few inches into the seats, like a frickin railgun. 0-60 in like 5 seconds, it would pull like a freight train....remember that most german luxo-cruisers are LIMITED to 155, take off the limiter and they'll really get going...we need an autobahn.

i switched camps not too long ago - going from a 2001 audi a4 to a 00 itr.

as far as handling goes in that a8 - well you have to remember its still using the quattro AWD system - and that 4.2 v8 will pull hard for as far as that limiter will allow. hell, even with the 1.8t that I had in my audi (granted it wasnt using the stock turbo) it pulled real hard past 130.

but dont think you can do much on an audi yourself as far as modifying it goes.
k04 turbo kit - 3gs+ for the lowest output turbo upgrade.
upgraded clutch - $1200
hell, just swapping suspensions with the awd system is 300+ anywhere you go just for labor.

but for a sleeper, it was hard to beat the 4 door 1.8t - which people are easily making in excess of 350 hp now.

now all you need to watch out for is the new s4 coming out soon with a v8 in the new a4 shell...
oh yeah, and the 450 hp awd rs6 coming out next year as well - m5 killer

rs4's werent imported in the states...though there are a few floating around (company cars, gumball 3000 had a couple imported for the ride, etc). they are absolute beasts tho...380 hp awd wagons.

While we are on the subject of fast big sedans. Anyone seen the newst toy from Bently? The Arnage T? Yes it weighs like 5000lbs+ and yes i'm sure it handles like *** even with the sport suspension mode turned on, and yes it's a quarter million dollars, but did anyone see what that put in it? Fuggin 6.75L twin turbo V8 making some stupid power. 400ish HP and 600ish tq Ran the 1320 in the mid 13's. Pretty cool.
Later.

yeah, i stated earlier they are bringin those 450hp beasts to the states...i think only 1200 if i remember correctly. a company in washington state actually imports the rs4 - for a price of 80+ grand - i think theyve imported one so far.

Audis have really improved over the years. They have some GREAT cars in their lineup now. A few negatives though...their resale value is VERY low for a German car and they are all a bit heavy.

BTW, you can find an anti-[insert mfg name here] for pretty much every brand out there (yes...*gasp*, even Honda! ). I think Audis have improved quite a bit as far as reliability is concerned but coming from a Honda...well, I dont need to complete that sentence.

Well I just read that the new A8s will be available with the W8 motor and possibly a W12.

But the baddest Audi to come out of Ingolstadt will be the RS6

This bad boy has an all aluminum 450-horsepower twin-turbo dual-intercooled 4.2-liter V8 (A8 motor) that provides peak torque flow between 1,950 and 5,600 rpm.

Availability for the US market is being considered.
