Wassup all,
Has any of you guys changed the vescosity of your oil to 5w30 or is it bad to do this. My autotech teacher says that the only reason honda uses 5w20 in our cars is to get better gas milage and it dosen't protect that well against wear and tear. What are your oppinions?

Yeah i figured you wouldn't gain anything except better protection but i wasn't sure if it would affect the gas milage ormake it harder to make power due to a little bit more restriction because of the higher vescosity.

""The main point to remember is to change your car's oil every 3 or so months or 3,000 miles, (or what your manual says)! Using the correct oil weight for your car is absolutely essential. This is usually notated in the owners manual and on the fill cover. If your car calls for 5W-30, then be sure to use 5W-30 in the winter time or you may experience problems with your car. Old-school logic dictated use of 10W-40 all year long but this is now considered outdated having been proven otherwise via laboratory testing. If your car calls for 5W-30 you probably have tight valve clearances on your engine and use of a 10W-40 product could cause it not start when the temperatures are colder. This is due to the valves being held open too far and from the lifters being pushed too far by heavier, slower moving oil.""
-Honda makes percision engines with not a lot of clearance in the internal components. That's why they call for 5w20 (newer civics). I run 5w20 synthetic. It is more expensive, but hey, it is worth it in the short run and long run.
I ran 10w 30 before in the winter, but I get some cold *** weather here in Canada so
the viscosity i put in is higher for the colder weather.

Since I switched to 5w20 synthetic a few months ago I have noticed my car running a ton better than before with just normal oil. Plus it lasts longer so you dont have to do an oil change every 3,000 miles. Instead I do mine ever 5-6k and thats with the certified Honda mechanice blessing. He said that 3k is optimum if youre out there racing or doing a lot of in town driving, but if youre like me and the majority of your miles are on the highway and not a lot of stop and go its all good to go a bit beyond that 3k mark.
If I had to change the oil every 3k miles I'd be changing my oil like ever 6 weeks.
