Painting Valve Cover.. ???
no primer is needed, just use aircraft stripper followed by wet sand...then use wrinkle/krinkled paint normally called wrinkle paint. This method will have it come out the best, and make sure to follow the directions on the car...applying coats takes effect in different durations then other paints.
Alright so I got my valve cover off and I've decided to go the Dupli-Color way. There's an awesome Gold I found which I'm also gonna be painting my Intake with. I'm ready to strip the old paint BUT-- is there a trick to getting the bolts out of the valve cover or do they not come off? Do those little washers come off on the inside? Also, will normal primer be able to withstand the heat if I use Dupli-Color engine enamel on top?
no, high heat primer is required if primering. You dont always need primer though. The bolts also come out, just pull harder.you should replace the valve cover gasket and plug tube o-rings while its off if they arent minty fresh, just a few bucks.
The valve cover does not get that hot, normal primer will work along with normal spray paint.
I was skeptical at first but mine has only scratched where the cable rubs and i painted it a year ago.

just pull harder? lol, funny cause that's usually the first thing i try and it always ends up bad haha. Then how would i get the metal washers back on and to lock them in, or are they not even needed? And I'm getting mixed answers... Regular primer or "high heat" primer??

Alright so I got the bolts out and stripped the old paint, I'm about to start wet sanding.... CAN I PRIME IT WITH REGULAR PRIMER WITHOUT ANY HEAT ISSUES??

When the oil "splashes" and hits the inside of the vc, you'll now have a brown vc.

i used the aircraft remover and dupli-color hight heat primer and paint. It turned out great. Its better to put many thin coats of paint than fewer heavy coats

good luck and let us know how it turns out

that's a rule everyone should know, anyway, i'm loved the shaved top with no lettering... but I'm workin on a Z6 one, i gotta get the black out of the O in 'honda' haha. I used a "POLY" super stripper spray, turns green after to show you where you sprayed... took it off nice but made a big mess, had to scrape it off THEN wash. I'll get a pic of it tomorrow. But yea I have some leftover regular primer... what the f is the difference between "DUPLICOLOR" and "regular primer" lol?

^helps alot. Keeps the stripper fron evaporating. It works longer/better.

a flap wheel on a grinder works the best i found, until the last very little bit, then like 40 grit on a palm sander. I have done 7 like this and not once used filler. 4 of which have been polished so if this tecnique didnt work, imperfections woulda shown. Sorry, dont have pics cause i dont own them.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by dem0nk1d »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">EFM_ookie
what did you use to grind the letters out? grinder and grinding disc? it looks good. you didn't need to use any filler either?

well my thumbs are now sore from sanding with 120-150 grit sandpaper, by hand
this is what i've got so far... I'm gonna give it another shot of the stripper but there's just one problem... i left it out on the balcony and it fell off the edge onto the little platform on the second floor, so i gotta climb up and grab it.
Priming soon!

what do you guys think? I still gotta get in and around the spark plug holes which is a bitch...

LOL... so if it FELL DOWN why do you have to CLIMB UP to get it

There's a little stupid thing that overhangs from the 2nd floor, it got stuck up there, so I went down and had to climb up, either that or jump down from the 4th floor.... lol. Anyways, I primed it and it's looking real good so far...
I just used a dremel with some grinding wheel, then hand sanded with 80, then went to 120 grit. Finished it off with a scotch bright pad!
no filler needed...just tons of sanding by hand to get that smooth finish
