Default I need new brakes.....but which ones?

I have a stock 97 civic that I need to replace the brakes and rotors. I was looking in on a couple other threads and saw some decriptions on different types of brakes - organic (what is this?), semi-metalic, ceramic....what's the difference with these?

The last brakes that I put on left my wheel covers all black. Is this due to the material?

Finally, is there a partitular brand that I should get (or not get)? I dont want to get anything mail order - dont feel like waiting for it and dont want to pay shipping.

Any thoughts?

For daily driving purposes duralast rotors and pads will be fine. Just get some good brake fluid.

The pad material just determines the life and stopping power.

More stopping, less life, less stopping power, more pad life.

your wheels turned all black b/c you were most likely using an organic pad. they put out the most brake dust.

i'd suggest PBR semi-metallic pads with some brembo blank replacements. if not any of the brand name, go with a semi-metallic and your brake dust will be cut down significantly.

autozone pads are fine unless you are racing and they are lifetime warranty, you can take them back and get afresh set whenever you want as many times as you want

every car 10+ years old could benifit from running fresh fluid through the lines.... so me when i put in my stainless lines i used some synthetic fluid which has a higher boiling point and not sure what else.... but just spend the extra 2-3 bucks and get the name brand kind.

as far as pads if yuou wanted a lifetime warranty go to your local vato-zone and get some name brand ones, that way if they wear out agian just take them back and theyll hook u up with brand new ones free of charge.

What does "organic" refer to?

I believe it means no metal in the friction material, organics will eat your rotors slower than metallic or semi

When you're not a trial member, there's a dealer in the Honda-tech marketplate in the wheels/tires/suspension forum.
