Default VTEC

I have a Civic 01 EX Sedan (Auto Transmission) VTEC engine (D17A2)....why can't I hear VTEC??? is there something I should do to enable it or something? or what RPM range should I reach to be able to hear it??? I'm confused...someone tell me what I should do or know about VTEC for this car...thanks.

VTEC kicks in at 2700 rpm's. You're probably not hearing it, because there's not a huge gain from when it kicks in.

do you know if there's any way I can adjust the VTEC to get higher gain?? the only thing I want from my car is the VTEC sound...and I'm not getting it....what do I do???

I already have a AEM V2 Intake and it produces a really nice engine sound, but I don't notice VTEC at all...but of course I heard it in my brother's Prelude...i even installed a 5-bolt AEM cam gear...but I don't hear VTEC still... ...does anyone else that has the same car hear VTEC?

Matt is correct about Vtec engagement, if u dont believe him go read the FAQ.

You will never find big gains from out engine, nor will u hear Vtec engage like the old DOHC VTec's. If u want to hear it engage hard.

But an older honda with a DOHC Vtec, or an RSX-S.

from the faq

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Miracle &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">]To make VTEC happen, the ECU has to realize the following parameters from the sensors on the motor:
1 Your MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor must read 0hg (aka 0 inches of vacuum). When it reads this it will send a 3volt signal to the ECU.
2. Your throttle has to be open 100% because your TPS sensor has to send a 4.5-volt signal to the ECU.
3. Your coolant temp has to be at running temp.
4. Vehicle speed has to be above 20mph.
5. You have to have 65-80 oil psi.
6. The engine must be running at a minimum of 4500 RPM.</TD></TR></TABLE>

dont know why you guys tell me im wrong than point me to a faq that supports what i said. eh...

Ok.... having had a couple of these heads torn apart, and had the damn thing on the dyno with the ability to play with it..... it engages somewhere in the 2500-3000 range.
Look at the cam. Its got one big intake lobe, and one effectively useless one (its nearly round). It runs on 1 intake valve down low, then the pins lock the rockers together and it runs on both intake valves following the big lobe.
Mine's set at 2200.... and the curves are perfect.... refer to the bottom line at 7 psi

Compare to this one.... VTEC at 5200, 7 psi

or this one... no VTEC, 7psi

Ignore the dip at the start, its just the dyno picking up the load

Look at where the cam dies.... it would be idiotic to set VTEC at 4K, you'd lose power before you started gaining it.

Bottom line, you will not hear it, the car is in VTEC almost all the time.

It is vtec-e, so you wont hear the normal vtec sound when it kicks in, as its designed for fuel economy, not more power. I'm wondering with a stage 1 cam if you'd hear it or not, but its definitely not like a b or k series.

You wanna hear tec kick in then buy a vti. The 1.7 coupe is just single cam...no power at all. I have the 1.7. I was gutted too buddy. My mate had a vti and I was like craaaaazy after 5,500rpm but then again the vti revs until about 8,200rpm or in that region. Im sure tec kicks in around 5,500rpm by the way. Type in vtec on youtube. There is a video explaining when it works and how it kicks in...

Well yes, obviously, get rid of the Auto. You need a manual. That goes without saying...

I wish I had got a 2000 vti now to be honest. Just love that car. 100bhp per litre :-)

VTAK lmao well your problem is that ure drivin a sedan lol. i think the newer vtecs xcept for the civic si's are to get beter gas mileage not for performance. the preludes and civic si's have the better vtecs that you can actually hear. yours is proly jus for economy and better gas mileage.
