Cylinder Wall Scatches
Motor has 615 miles on it and was smoking a bit. Im changing out valve seals this week and will be reinstalling the head after that. I noticed these scratches and figured the same guy that put my head back together also screwed up the bottom end as well. These scratches I cant feel with my finger "YET" but assuming at this rate by 20k miles the cylinders will need a bore. Will the motor run well with minor scratches in the cylinders? Maybe all the scratches are from large amounts of oil turning into carbon and being caught on the compression stroke?

I have honestly seen worse. If you have the funds to do something now go for it, but it should be ok assuming that you dont drive like a asshat all day long
Those pistons look pretty nasty for only 615 miles, assuming they were clean before going in.
When you say you can feel them with your finger, can you catch your nail in any of them?

If you don't catch your nail in anything, you should be fine.
I would suggest if you don't despise taking the head off too much,
to probably check it again after a thousandish miles, unless it gets worse before that.

by the amount of cabon lip on that i'd say you washed your cylinder walls out and started scratching them with the rings. Hone it, new rings and get it tuned.

did you tune after initial startup? you shouldnt have to break it in that long. because what 92boostedgsr said about washing your walls out makes sense.

make sure the cylinder is within specs b4 going any further.....if its ok then procede. its appears someone tried to hone it....get the right hone and diy or have the same guy do it again... http://www.in.honda.com/Rjanis...A.PDF

just re-ring it, they're cheap and you already have the slugs out....might as well.goodluck

Yeah, you need to pull the pistons out and see what is going on with the rings. I'll bet that is what is causing your smoking problem, not the valve seals.
What exactly was rebuilt on the engine? It looks worse than my 160k mile motor.

A hone isn't going to help get rid of those scratches.
