Default My swap with some questions

I just finished installing a d16z6 in my 91 si. I converted it to obd1 using a jumper harness. Everything went perfectly, it started right up and runs really well. The only thing is that i cannot tell if the vtec is working. No check engine light after 200 miles. If i drive it with the soleniod unplugged it feels the same as with it plugged in. This is my first honda but i expected more of a difference. Can i apply power the the solenoid at idle and see if it changes to verify the mechanical side of it ? I cant wait to turbo this thing but i want to make sure everthing is working properly first! Thanks for the help.

Here are some pics

have you drove the car or just revved it to hear it kick?
cause when i swapped my motor and was waiting for my rpm switch i drove it around w/o vtec and it would barely rev past 5000rpms.
it was a pretty obvious thing.

btw i like the valve cover whered u get the paint

You can apply 12 volts to the solenoid and see if it activates. VTEC on a SOHC isn't nearly as audible as a DOHC motor. Also, don't expect to feel very much difference either.

Nice, clean swap BTW.

true its not jekyl and hyde like a dual cam but you can definatly hear it crossover.
and like i said before w/o it hooked up it was nearly impossible to rev to redline

Thanks for the compliments, i think i will try powering up the solenoid tomorrow just to make sure its working. When rpm does it normally activate at when driving?

The paint is just wrinkle black that i sprayed green over while it was still a little wet

Remember with constant power the solenoid it's on all the time, don't leave it on, or bad stuffs gonna happen

i can hear it on a d15b but on a z6 ive never heard it engage. But its true about reving it up past 5g's. It would take longer to redline that bitch. So do a performance test on that lil z6.

I did the plugged/unplugged but test on the way home today and i still swear that its not working. So i tried hot wiring the solenoid at idle. It clicked but nothing happened to the idle speed or quality. I assume this means that something in the valve train is not right. I also removed the solenoid and made sure the screen was clean because that seems to be a common problem but it was perfect. The only thing i can think of is that there is not enough oil pressure at idle to make the vtec work so my test might be innacurate. Can anyone verify that vtec will work at at idle if jumped??

do you have any friends that would happen to have any vtec hondas that you could borrow their solenoid to see if there is maybe somthing wrong with yours.. even though its clicking there might still be somthing wrong with it.. try to wire it up so you can feed it 12v while under load when your driving.. see if you can feel or hear anything then.. hmmm.. dont know what else could be wrong other than somthing in the valvetrain like you said.. are all your lost motion assemblys clean? all oil passages clean? but yeah yeah, clean swap btw! im diggin the valve cover too, nice

I just use the car to commute to san jose and for track days. It looks stock and i spend most of my commute sitting in traffic so the cops dont really bother me.

My weekend car on the other hand is going to get me arrested one of these days
Its a 55 with 2909 turbo fuel injected type 4
