DON'T DO WHAT I DO! hahaha just kidding.

I went from SoCal to NorCal to pick up a Rollbar. Set out at 2AM got back at 7PM that night. I went about 46hrs without sleep.

So basically, get a lot of sleep, drive carefully, take breaks often, drink water, bring energy drinks cuz they do help! Switch drivers after a while, make sure your effing radio works, bring food and cash, check your spare and all your road assistance tools.

And bring a friend, that long of a drive alone would be a major nutbuster...

Good luck!

On my way to SF, I drove from Pittsburgh, PA to North Platt, NE in one day. That was 1100 miles and 18 hrs in the saddle. I couldn't put my arms down when I exited the vehicle.

just make sure to check/change all your fluids, tire pressure etc. other than that theres not much else you can do aside from the whole tuneup.

Has anybodies car ever broke down while on a road trip far from home or relative. I just kind of wonder what you do in that case. Ditch the car?

Maybe I hooked up a 55 gallon fuel drum in the hatch and wore diapers like an astronaut.

That is an unfortunate possibility. You can prepare to pay large and wait for repairs or try to ship the car home. I had a car (the wife's Geo Prism grr...) break down 100 miles from home. I decided it was in my financial best interest just to have them tow it to my house for $200 rather than find a hotel, get a rental car, fix the car, and then come back for it.

Depending on the length of the trip, it may ultimately be better to rent a car. If you have an accident or break-down, you simply call the rental company and they bring you another car. Most full coverage insurance policies cover rental cars as well. This obviously doesn't work with one-way or extended trips.

YOu should just take all this and make it into a checklist lol.

Well I drove from MARYLAND- ORLANDO and believe me driving alone sucks!

Energy drinks are a very good thing to have.

Checklist....
1: Oil!!
2: Radiator Fluid
3: Gallon or two of water. (trust me it helps in the event that something gets really hot, or fuked up in the engine bay and your stuck in the middle of nowhere.)
4: Fix a flat tire repair kit.
5: Pack of cigarettes if your a smoker
6: And something crunchy to eat. It helps keep you up.
7: Flashlight

Advice:
: Don't try to speed to much or mash through the gears because if anything goes wrong and your in Kansas ..... then... well that would suck.
: Depending on if your car looks modded or not.... theres always going to be someone that wants to race you. This is what you do in case that does happen.

1: Put up the middle finger and motion with it to have him put his window down.
2: Ask him if he's from around the area. If he repllies yes, tell him in a serious tone "Im not local and i highly doubt you have the whole country to cross"
3: Put window up and keep cruising lol

Don't have to be an ******* but you will be once you get frustrated with the drive

Good luck on your trip man!

And best of advice!! If there are any H-Techers along your way. DO a little meet and greet!

Roundtrip is the keyword... and 6 hours sounds bout right. 99/ I-5 South and North blows. Also it might be none of my business but why are you going to Fresno?

Since you said it burns oil, you might want to bring a dozen or more bottle with ya.

55 gallon drum of gas would put on so much weight it would kill your mileage. and take up your cargo room.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Redemption &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Has anybodies car ever broke down while on a road trip far from home or relative. are you really gonna ditch your teg in the middle of nowhere while you drive off another thousand miles? what could possibly happen.

also some more advice i can give is re-recify your car. im not saying your car is riced but cops might not know that, put on your steelies if you got em, easy on the body kits.. anything thats gonna draw more attention from cops or people who do want to race.

id also suggest setting the cruise at no higher than 70-75. with the short gearing you dont want your engine to run at 4k rpms for a day or 2 straight. and cruise will save you some gas.

You are either:

Using teleportation

or

Found a road other than 99 to travle on... 99 sucks.

or (and most likely the case)

Didn't read that he said round trip. I live in Turlock (right at 1/2 way between the 2 on 99). I can get to either one in about an hour 15, or hour 20 mintues.

Longest was Chambersburg, Pa to Miami Beach

I think it was 22 hours. Split between 2 drivers

Take lots of breaks, and if you do get tired take a 30min break and do some streches or a quick jog or something.

Roadtrips are fun! I drove from the top of I-5 near Oak Harbor, WA all the way to the bottom to Chula Vista, CA. Then from there, I drove to New Mexico to Oklahoma and finally a 24 hour endurance drive all the way to MD. No co-pilots, but I had a cell phone.

Most of the usual maintenance checks have been covered by everyone else. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to make sure your cooling system is in its best shape, especially in the summer. I sprung a leak from one of my coolant hoses...not the larger upper and lower hoses, but rather one of the smaller ones. Fortunately, I was staying in San Diego and wasn't driving long distances there. Make sure you have full confidence in your radiator, otherwise change it out. Same goes for your thermostat and fan switch. And when everything is put together, drive the car around while at home to make sure nothing leaks.

As far as the trip itself, make sure you carry a credit card. You never know what will happen. Check your tire pressures every other gas stop. Drink lots of water so you **** often, therefore making you pull over every now and then. I had a small cooler full of sandwiches, energy drinks, and water. Stop for anything that interests you...bring a digicam and take some pictures. Explore a little bit. When you get tired, don't hesitate to pull over at a rest stop and take a nap. Even 30 minutes goes a long way. At the same time, be aware of your surroundings. Blast your music, call people every now and then, and you should be fine.

My old roomate drove his dumped 99 LS from Maryland to NorCal a couple years back during summer time...with no AC! He had his car loaded with all of his things so his car was even lower! He basically told me he got lots of sleep the nights before, brought a case of water and energy drinks, a small ice chest, lots of snacks, a pillow to sleep in the car at rest stops, etc.

As for your car, do a fresh oil change, change the plugs, look over all your fluids; coolant, brakes, etc. Check your tire pressure and make sure you bring a spare, some tools, etc. Good luck!

My question came from the thought when you are about 600 miles away from home out in nowhere with the closest town being 30 miles away. Also I taken a few road trips from Seattle to LA but that was in my parents two year old BMW and I never went over 75MPH. I saw a lot of cars pulled over in South Oregon I-5 because of the huge hills and the same thing when I came near LA on the I-5 there was this huge hill.

EDIT: Oh and during one of the trips some dudes tire blew out when we were like in the middle of nowhere on I-5.
