Just a loathing thought..........
What if, over the lifespan of this car, like some other manufacturers do(yes even Honda)the S2000 recieved horespower upgrades in the form of premium models like the Type R or Si.
What I was dreaming would be a version that Had:
Hardtop, No vert top.
Engine size 2.2 or 2.4 along with 265 or 280 Horespower, all mortor.
And all the usual chassis upgrades.....Especially stronger diff...
The interior would be recaros or the like instead of leather interior.
All in all very plausible. And what the CR could've been.

it would cost more (already has an MSRP of $34k+)
it would be a crowd specific car (tons of folks buy them now)
a 265-280 horsepower mortar would kill people, not good
it probably wouldn't make it to the states
in the end it wouldn't be an s2000

Of course it would cost more. But so did the Type R and how did that do?
I think that 42-45k would make it a very affordable car.Would be a competitor to the porsche Cayman S or Lotus Elise.
280hp in a car weighing only 2700(2800 Base) would make it very fast. The Z06 falls into this category surely and its doing just fine.
BTW what does this mean? Because this cant be a bad thing.

Plus the CR has the stupid bdyaddons and yellow stitching. No substance.
But yes it does have hardtop, suspension changes. If thats what you meant.

the zo6 is far from the category, it weighs about the same but the performance is far greater then even your idea of what the s2k 'type r' should be.
I think 40-45k for an s2000 'type r' would be a hard sale.
alot of people buy the car now because its a soft top 2 seater with decent power. If you slap a hard top on it, give it a peaky powerband, and a stiff suspension then you are aiming it at a specific crowd.

From: TRILLINOIS....WAY downtown, jerky.
This is gonna be long and drawn out...but anyway:
There's allready a pretty specific crowd to S2000s. I mean old men buy them as midlife crisis cars. And more well off younger people (starting to become more common now, though) buy them as toys. Old men that buy them are generally indifferent towards them. This is because of the fact that cars like the corvette exist. V8 power band, and more red blooded american image give cars like the corvette an edge over the S2000 (market-ability wise).
The S2000 you dreamed up would be aimed at people that care more about performance than creature comforts. The Z0-6 gives up no creature comforts. It costs 70k, has a 7 liter motor, and runs 11s easily. This isn't even close to your dreamed up S2000. Think about how many Z0-6s you see on the road (C6). Not too many. Old men buy corvettes as sunday drivers. They figure they'll save the $30k and buy the regular C6. The Z0-6 has a super narrow market. Think about track edition 350zs as another example of a 40k japanese sports car. Most People that are willing to buy something like an S2000/350/corvette are just looking for a fun toy that looks nice, that they can show off to their friends and neighbors on sundays. Not a race car.
The engine you're asking for is also hard to achieve. This engine alone will put you above the $45k mark. Think about it. For $35k currently, you get a 2 seater car with no navigation, a radio that looks like it's out of a 85' daewoo, OPTIONAL seat speakers (9 speaker bose is available even on the miata), and really nothing special in the **** and vinegar department. **** and vinegar sells cars in the American market. Where do you think all your money goes currently? Huge cubic megadollars of motor and chassis engineering. To make your 2.whatever liter 4 cylinder produce 280hp, and still pass emissions, be reliable, driveable, quiet, startable every day, and last over 100k.....you're looking to pay some $$$.
Even if we were looking 45k, you'd look a lot cooler in this country driving a Corvette with a big V8, leather and navigation rather than bouncing around to the pharmacy and buying hemmorhoid cream with your recaro'd S2000 with a race car suspension. To most people here, (prior to driving one) the S2000 is an overgrown miata. The corvette is considered more of a performance car. This is why corvettes sell a LOT better than S2000s.
Lastly, Honda tried to build a hard S2000. Remember the 00-01 S2000? People wanted a softer, more kid friendly S2000. So they got softer every year. You're asking Honda to build one that will bitch slap your wife when you're not looking.
There's simply no place for the S2000 you dreamed up. Besides that, the S2000 allready has an impressive performance envelope. It's like a type R without the type r badging. lol it has a RED VALVE COVER too.

In Honda's mind, the CR is the car you describe. You may not like the new seats, but that is their version of a sport seat (didn't Recarro design the seats in all the S2000s anyway?).
As for the extra power, Honda is more concerned about warranty liabilities. They would have to invest way more in the development of a 280hp in line 4 than it would be worth to them. Keep in mind also that sales continue to decline. I think 2008 will be the last year for the car.

Im just saying that a little bit more power is very possible. Cloth seats would be more desireable. whether they are recaros, or not already.
The car I dreamed up is very possible and i think that the street cred it would bring to the s2000 would more than make up for the cost of development. Think about it. More regular S2000's would sell if there were a 'sport' model available to increase marketability.
just my .02 but i think that it would be a great idea.
I dont think adding 20-40 more hp and a hardtop with cloth seats would bring the price up more than 7-10 k over msrp.

/cry. why don't you buy your own hardtop, suspension upgrades, cloth recaros, and own engine upgrades?
it would be cheaper than if honda actually did come out with a type r.

Build it. Take out your soft top, buy a hardtop, stiffen the chassis and suspension, and finally build up the engine.
what Honda did with the AP2 is unHonda, instead of putting out more power, like they usually do, they just made the engine slightly bigger without any hp gains.
Overseas they still have a 2.0

I though honda tech was for people lookingto improve pefrmance in their car. if yu are willing to spend 45k for a s2k then it is very posible for you to by one and improve apond it your self. a used s2k range from 15k-34k that leaves a lot of money left over to do all the mods you want like hard top cloth recaro seats more hp and that whats great about the car. i bought a used 01 for 17.5 k and would be able to spend a lot less the 30k to get what you described
