VSS trouble
Hey guys.. I just got a code 17 on my p28 ecu (with d16y8 engine) vehicle speed sensor. The CRX one is just a cable that goes into the transmission, right? I guess that the later civics have an electronic connection for this, right? How do I go about fixing this??
on the P28 the vehicle speed sensor its located on the tranny's as well as on OBDII also they have it there...
on the CRX and **** they dont have it on the tranny... i havent found out yet how the **** the OBDO know the speed of the car.. i am wondering if the speedo cable has something to do with it.. and its inside of the car over the cluster or something......if someone knows how the OBDO cars know the speed let me know!!!! i think its also with the crank angle sensor wich tells the ecu the rpms. wich i dont think will know the speed...
anyways the ecu trows u the code bc u dont have the sensor plugged.. unless u havent used the Y8 tranny. and if u did and the sensor its still fucked. forget it.. that way at top speed the speed governor wont hit and u can redline and go 130+ lucky for u!

maybe on a P28 and OBDI
My buddy has his 99 EX and the VSS was fucked and the vtec was working... maybe OBDI and OBDII are diff...
by the way!??? the speedo input to ecu its on 4G or 5G?? didnt get the mess on that short sentence

OK... further diagnosis and thoughts... I know the VSS for the EF/ED Civics is in the gauge cluster. The speedo pickup cable generates the signal at the gauge end, which is sent to the ECU. Yes, your stock ECU gets the signal
.
I'm thinking it's not a problem with the speedo pickup from the tranny, since the speedo is working fine. Since he had that minor electrical problem, he might have partially fried his VSS sender in the gauge cluster... we're going to swap his and mine since I'm putting that new clutch in anyway and can't drive mine right now
But maybe it's a loose wire on the conversion subharness...
Oh, just a final note: He passed emissions test today with flying colours

My first post. The 4th gen civic speedometer cable doesn't work electronically. The vss sends the signal. I think the gauge cluster doesn't do anything, because i've driven a lot of times without a gauge cluster, and i could even break vtec. It's just a bunch of reading for the driver to see. If you take out your gauge cluster, and stick a thick needle inside the hole where the speedometer plugs into, you can actually work the speedometer, by turning/twisting the needle either clockwise or counter, the speed will go up. The faster you spin, the higher the speed. That's how the speed sensor work, kinda cheap, i wanna stick with the regular b16a electronic speed sensor, but i'll have to convert everything to jdm (wiring, cluster, etc.)
My speed sensor went out twice on me. First, it was the sensor that broke, which is kinda rare, so i replaced that. Second time was when my friends were done swapping in the motor, and it just stop working. It couldn't be the sensor, cause i replaced that. It was the cable that snapped, i could still break vtec.
First thing i would check, is the cable. Unplug the cable from both ends, have to take out the gauge cluster to disconnect the cable, and you have reach in to unplug from the tranny end. Pull out the metal tip from the cable for like 5inches on either side, then check the other side, which you didn't pull, to see if the other end of the metal tip is NOT there. If it happens to be there, the speedometer cable is gone, otherwise, replace the sensor. It could be the wiring, but that's the last thing i would check.
