Someone talk me out of this.. Trading the SI for Evo Mr. Hopefully some insight from blue rocket..
So my friend is selling his evo. It's an 06, Wicked White with 4k miles on it.
The car is in flawless condition.. Has some mods done, one of which I'm pretty sure is an upgraded FMIC. The car is putting out about 290 WHP.
He was looking to get something like $32,000. He paid somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 for it only a few months ago, didn't drive it too much, and put a bit of money in it bumping up the power a bit.
The car has turned out to be 'too much' for him. The insurance is too high (several speeding tickets prior to owning the car).. he paid for the car in cash and has a kid on the way so he's needing some extra cash.
He was pretty intrigued by the idea of trading cars with me. We came upon the deal of my car and 10 thousand in trade for his car. Sounds like a pretty fair trade to me
The reason I'm pondering this is because the Evo has always been kind of my ideal car, it was the car I vowed to get as soon as I got a good job. I have the 10 thousand to throw down on the car, and I checked out the insurance already and it's deal-able. The Si hasn't been 'all that' that I thought it would be. The lack of torque is kind of getting to me, and I didn't really think it through when I got it.
Anyone care to offer some insight on why I should avoid this? I'm in a good place financially so I'm not worried about insurance or anything like that. Hopefully I can get some insight from an owner / previous owner of an Evo (blue rocket?)
Thanks for any insight on this

First I would like to just say thats not much of "an ideal car" Its not even an MR (the only one actually worth getting)
For 32,000 you can have a GTO, and its a million times faster, and will turn more heads than a riced evo with altezza-like tail lights and a huge wing.
Second, I know for a fact, and have so many countless friends and personal referenced accounts that Mitsubishi Evo transmissions are garbage, particularly the clutch. The clutch is terrible. You are going to have problems there. The car handles great, (though it feels like its going to tip over sometimes in a heavy corner) but for that money, there is so much better out there.
Not only will your insurance sky rocket, so will your payments. You will be stuck with a hooked up car with moderate potential with a turbo upgrade, but you can kiss your reliabilty all down the drains. All my friends with turbo upgrades on their evo (most commonly from the Mitsubishi 16G to the 20G turbo) are in the shop non stop, literally once or twice a week.
You can pay 32,000, and enjoy the car for what it is, have transmission problems later (well i should say soon), or you can keep your SI and have more money available to make it a lot faster than an Evo. (ala Slapping on an AJP kit)
At least if you are going to get rid of the SI, don't get an Evo, get something else. (hint hint GTO)

Part of the price of a honda it seems goes to the quality of design and components that go into the car that make it more reliable and less prone to expensive problems, at least early on. As long as you factor in the fact that you'll probably be tossing down more cash more often to keep the evo up and running the way it should be, I don't see why not.
ley makes an interesting point on what do to with 32,000, but I think its safe to assume you don't have a friend with a GTO willing to make the same deal.

I'm confused by your post kinda.. For one, it is an evo MR. Hence the $35k price tag and me saying "trading the SI for Evo MR."
Also, there would be no payments. I have 10 thousand in cash, and my car. I would just continue to make payments on my car (that's how I presume it would work)
Also, what do you mean by 'moderate potential'? People are putting down like 500 WHP on the stock block, which is more than enough for me. In fact, I probably wouldn't even touch the power after what he has done. 290 WHP and AWD is plenty for this guy. Also, evo's handle mods quite well it seems. They pick up power quite easily.
And GTO would never fly with me. For one, I think they look horrible. A car should look its part, and that car doesn't look like it's packing 400 hp/tq. Also, RWD is a no-go in Minnesota.

I think he was talking about the "GTO" like Mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 with 300 AWHP. I own a vr4 and ill tell you right now that i beat most Sti's and Evo's around my area. But then again a Evo was my dream car but i couldn't afford it either.

Shoot, I'd get it if I were in your position. AWD, HID, ACD, Brembo Brakes, Turbo and so on, so forth. Do it man.
i like evos but some guy around here has an black evo i believe 05, and after doing a couple of launches he burned the cutch. i think its a cool car tho to mod. interior lacks a bi tbut eh whatever.
IMHO you should just turbo ur SI . This is the best thing out there. You will have the only Turbod si in your block, Most likely more power then the EVo asell. And as for AWD, well you cant have everything. and you will probably have about 5 grand left for savings.

do it........ u ****** trader.

There is a reason the EVO is over 10k more, because it's a much better car. It's your choice if you think the added money is worth it, but like was said before just be prepared for maintenance items such as clutches and tires sooner than you would expect with a Civic.

Your friends driving them are garbage then. Anything under abuse or not preloaded in a AWD car will eventually break. AMS's 900whp customer car ran a stock tranny for a very long time under countless street, track, and dyno passes on 4 drag radials with no problems.

that's a great deal, dude. In my opinion, I think you would be stupid not to do it provided you don't mind throwing the cash his way.
I can almost guarantee that you'll regret not doing this unless you think you'll be in the market for a new car withing a few years at which point you can get something nicer/better than the current evo

I'll throw my $.02 into the pot. Get the Evo if you can afford it. The money down + the monthly insurance hike + possible speeding tickets + urge to buy mods. From your other posts on here, it sounds like you make a decent amount of money to have this deal work out in your favor and actually afford all of that.
So - wait for bluerocket to see what he has to say, then make your decision

I thought about turboing the SI as well, but AJP is the only worth-while turbo out right now and I don't know if I would entrust my car to them. Not only that, but I want power that moves the car, not just smokes some tires.
I'm not paying '32k' for it either. It's a decently modded Evo that is already discounted 3k+ from the few months he has owned it. Then you factor in the money he put into it, plus only 10k on top of mine. Mine would realistically fetch 18-19 if I sold it now, so it's looking like 28-29k for a very new evo with some mods. How is that retarded?
And I wouldn't be a trader.. yet
I still own my 06 Civic LX. Still an 8th gener!

sounds like a great deal to me... but be carefull if it was me buying that car a few weeks after the trade all the civic si owners in town would have found some company sellin sick turbos or super chargers for cheap and they would be smokin that evo... thats how my luck would turn out... hope your isnt like that (crossing my fingers for some good mods on the si though)
check to see how much it would be to trade it in for an si if you dont like it... if you loose any or too much then think about it... find a website like this and see if people are havin serious problems first hand and what they did to correct it.
eather way at least your not buying a mustang

GTo! I am thinking about trading my Si in for a 4 dr GTO the holden comadore. it will be the pontiac G8. thats me, I would like to keep the si too! good luck!!
being a previous owner my only complaint was how much gas the damn thing drank , if you can afford it theres no reason not to, the cars handling is amazing.. and imo the new evo x looks trash to me compared to the ct9a
oh and i just read youre not digging the lag of torque on the si well i dont know if youve driven the evo but under 3k at least on the 03 niiiiiiiiiiiice turbo lag let me tell you but at least the boost is a kick in the pants specially if you turn it up
