Default 94 accord auto transmission question

Just inherited a 94 accord with auto transmission from a relative. Transmission is acting up, hence their decision to part with the car. 124k miles. Unlike other cars I've worked on, it doesn't seem that there is a trans pan, and the magnet/screen appear to be embedded in the transmission. Is there an easy way to access these? I would like to inspect for metal shavings. The tranny appears to be starved for fluid, but the level check is normal. My relative claimed that it wouldn't even move for him. After towing about 700 miles to my home, the car does move, but takes 5-10 seconds from the time it is put into gear until movement begins. I wonder if maybe a clogged screen was partially cleared during the tow, but that leads to a deeper question concerning what clogged the screen. I suspect major repair needed, but the magnet/screen should tell me a lot, if I can access them.

Thanks for any help.

I don't think there is any easy way to get to the screen. Did you try changing the fluid?

theres a 3/4's rachet drain plug on the bottom. Take it out and the magnets on the plug. I would suspect the fluid was never changed, and is burnt up. There is no user replaceable screen unless you do a full rebuild.

The trannies seem to be pretty cheap too. YOu could probably pick up one for $150-$250. If you are handy, you could probably swap it out rather than spending too much time to rebuild if the tranny is toast.
