ok, I ran into another problem with my timing belt job.

Honda lists two different tensioners for the D16Y8. One is a Koyo and one is a Nippon. I was unaware of this being an issue but I guess they are slightly different. The diameter of the tensioer is slightly different and the spring is way different.

I just found out I had a Nippon on my car but bought a Koyo.

So my question is, is the diameter difference going to be an issue if I just use the Koyo tensioner with the old Nippon spring? I don't see why it would since it's just putting tension on the belt but...

Another thing is I can't see why the springs would be different, they only list one part number for the spring so one would think the spings would be the same between the Nippon and Koyo right?

 

If you install the belt and the tension is good, I wouldnt worry about it.
But there is a chance that the diameter could make the belt too tight or loose.

Just use your best judgement.

meaning, if the tensioner is slightly bigger, wouldn't the spring just not compress as much and if the tensioner diameter was slightly smaller wouldn't the spring compress more?

No you are thinking correctly.
As long as the diameters are no too different, it shouldnt be a problem.

Just install it and make sure the tension is ok.

 

yeah, I was going to assemble everythign with the new parts and see how it looks first. BUT as I was putting the water pump back in I broke a bolt! Dont ask

So now I have to get a new bolt which Honda probably doesn't stock and get the broken end out of the block. So I may see how it all fits together still but I'll try calling Majestic and see what they say about a return for the Nippon tensioner.

We'll see how things go, I will update after.
