If you had 4k and a stock ek hatch to work with what would you build?
I have 4k cash, no more no less, i want to be able to drive daily on the street but i want power in the same. What would you do??
Some ppl upgrade appearance first, then power. I am the opposite. With 4k, go with B18 or B16. If you get a B16, don't be upset when it feels like D (so i've heard) because of low-end torque.
A B16 with forced induction is usually prett nice.(w/ tune) But this would require you peiceing togeather your own turbo kit. People have done it for really cheap. It's not hard, you just need to know what you're looking for. Look around to see what others have done. turbo-kits are just too expensive since it's convienence for you, but i'd look into it.

screw b series, just get a turbo system and build the d engine.
Don't think I'm anti B-series, I have one.....I just think that for this guy, the best bang for the buck will be a turbo setup + built motor.
This will get the most horsepower for $4k.

you want fast? or numbers?
because h2b's don't make impressive peak numbers, but for 4k you could easily do an h2b and put yourself in the mid 12's without Forced induction.
If I had 4k hard cold cash that's what i'd do.

ya you can build a d and boost it for less than 4k... i was going to do it i had all my listings ready to start buying and i've decided to just boost it on stock internals cause of my college situation and i need the extra cash i'll find the list and post up what it cost for me to build and boost my d15b hold on
edit: building my own turbo kit and building the motor sleeved included it was $3896 and some change... but that is me doing all the work and then just taking it to a machine shop to be balanced and the sleeves

Im feeling H2B too if you are going to spend the money regardless of everyones opinion.
If you are willing to be smart and save a good chunk of that change, then search around and find a B18B1 and boost that or boost the D like others have said. Think about long and hard though, you have 4k cash! Couldn't you be smart with that money and just sit on it for a while and buy something you really want/need? If I had to do it all over again I would have been smarter about my decisions with my car/money.

If I had 4K and an EK hatch here's what I'd do:
(assuming you have a y8 in there currently that is in good shape)
zex cam and valvetrain->300
piece together a turbo kit with tuning costs->1500+
ASR 23mm rear swaybar kit ->340
good shocks/springs(or sleeveovers if you prefer height adjustability)->500
then assuming you don't want to put any in the bank, get some wheels or CF

What's with all the "CF is a good upgrade" comments?

Congratulations, you spent $2500 and saved 26 lbs
$2500 would goa lot farther in a honda in making it more powerful, not lighter.

probably be able to build the d-series and boost it then have some left over which will go towards whatever you want(just boosted mine and i love it, its stock though and i want to swap out tranny's(cx) for ex and build my motor.
$4k ..
I'd build a d16z6 .. You can get a block/trans for $250 [that's how much mine was] You can pick up pistons/rods and all your internals like main bearings, rod bearings for less than $1000. You can piece together a nice turbo kit for around $1500 (get a nice turbo!)
Just get some forged guts and boost 1.5 bar (21psi). Have an electronic boost controller that way its not always so "high strung" on the street. Oh, and the reason I say go z6 and not with the OBD2 y8 is because they have weak(er) oil pumps and don't always prove to be that reliable.

its not that expensive to build the bottom end of a d series, i have one and was looking and with vitara pistons and scatt rods thats under $600, he wouldnt have to sleeve it cuz stocks hold up pretty good.
build and boost the d you will enjoy it
