Default bluish white smoke coming out the exhaust..

I have a swapped Type R engine in my EF, and it seems to always have used a little oil, which my mechanice assured me was just some oil loss due to VTEC. Recently, I started a new job where I commute to another city driving over a mountain pass and back, and the engine used a quart and a half of oil in one week. I removed the cat to return it to the person I borrowed it from and installed the JDM Type R header, and I notice bluish smoke pouring out the exhaust. What is happening to my beloved Type R engine?

I suspect your piston rings are on their way out.

Could it be anything else? Valve guides? Head gasket? This engine reportedly only has about 70K on it, what could the previous owner have done to it to make the rings go bad prematurely?

i suppose it could be the valve seals but the piston rings are probably more likely the problem

Do a leak down test and find out for sure

How do you perform the leakdown test? Also, someone told me that synthetic oil, which is what I use, would not burn the same way and produce the same bluish smoke as regular petroleum? Is this correct or not?

hahaha.......Either way, you're using a lot of oil......most likely rings.

Just do a compression test, only do each cylinder twice, first time normal, second time wet with about a teaspoon of oil into it and compare all the numbers. You are looking for all to be similar and not too off.

They should not be more than 10 psi between wet and dry or there is a problem with the rings.
