Default distributor question

my tach has been floating (intermittently) for a while now. i took off the dist. a while back and tightened some of the screws. it seemed to help out for a little while.

got a new battery installed since my old one was dead and they worked for a bit...

but now my floating tach is back. i figure the dist. is bad.

the question i have is that when i spin the rotor, the movement isn't smooth. its notchy, like it spins a little and then "rests" in a notch. but the notches are all the same movement apart. is my bearing bad?

if that isn't it, then i will replace the igniter unit. can i use and Si igniter instead of the 88 teg one i have???

thanks.

the more i think about it, the more i think the bearing might be ok. usually when you have an electric motor, the movement is never quite smooth as the magnets hinder the movement (at least this is what i think).

so its not that i don't believe you... i just like getting multiple opinions.

well maybe a magnet is bad? all i know is that on my mine it was the main bearing and was a bitch to turn. but the other one we had with a good bearing was free flowing , we could just spin it will no problems, thats why i think it is your bearing. It could be one of those little sensors though, look for grit around where the bearings are. i will just look at it when i get up there

it will have -some- resistance, kind of like a stepper motor.

mine isn't a bitch to turn. it has some very slight resistance. you can see for yourself tonight...

ok mine has slight resistance and seems to sit in a "seat" when you spin it. so it sounds like its not my bearing then...good.

now, can i use the Si igniter in an 88 teg dist. or does it have to be the teg igniter? just trying to see what i need to look for at the junkyard.

You can use -ANY- honda ignitor, they are all the same. Like i said, all early 90s/late 80s ignitors are defective. But, just use what you have anyhow. You will probably still get a few years out of it.
