Default turbo - supercharger

I once read an article about a Volkswagen that was both supercharged and turbocharged but I didn't really understand how it worked and I was curious if this could be done with any car/any application, not necessarily an H22.

It has its obvious advantages but I was just curious if anything like this was even possible. I always figured there would be a problem with the turbo and the suprecharger entering the intake at the same point but I don't know a whole lot about superchargers either.

This is all THEORETICAL. I am in no way endorsing or going to attempt this.

Yeah, it's possible and it's been done. Certainly you wouldn't want to use a centrifugal supercharger:

but if you had a roots type supercharger bolted to the intake manifold then the turbo could easily feed into the blower.

It's a bad idea though for I'm sure many reasons....the heat created is probably rediculous

ya it cuases alot of heat, but when that is fixed it hold a very nice power band. there is a guy on here that has a setup like that and has a bypass that cuts off the sc when the turbo kicks in.

The heat issue isnt as big as you would think, a friend of mine had a 16g turbo with a jackson racing supercharge on a d16a6 and it ran great he ran 8psi off the supercharger and 10 psi on the turbo ... turbo kicked in at like 3500rpm and then the party really started. he had a evo style cf hood and a nice sized intercooler.

its a lot of custom work to do this and i don't even know if its ever been done on a prelude...i already planned out how it would work using parts form a jrsc and a modified venom sheet metal manifold. the only way i know to get a belt back to the intake though is to use a the pulleys from a jrsc, but the whole bracket and jackshaft costs about $1000+ and i don't know if thats worth it. there are many more $100's probably in making a bracket, bypass valve, heat exchager, blower etc...

it would be pretty killer though to run an m90 blower and a gt35r on a 2.4l h22..the powerband would be incredible...i was imagining a lagless gt35r.

the roots type, low-psi blowers that jackson racing makes for the h22 are basically worthless if you're already doing a turbo setup, just size it correctly and you will not have to worry about spool

and jared is right, those superchargers are HORRIBLE heat-wise.

that would work very well..the jrsc only has about a 1" bypass valve...the bypass needs to more eficient than is possible with that setup to keep it from generating too much heat.

oh i forgot to add....that turbo looks tiny! it will be running out of air at high RPM's,

i thought it was supposed to be big turbo w/ a supercharger....to counteract spool time...

It can be done, but you really have to know what you're doing. Read this thread, I know it changed the way I think about twin-charging:
