Default Fuel pump removal question? Jumper wire, whys it required

It says in the workshop manual to disconnect the connector from the main relay at the left hand side of the cowl and and to bridge the blk/yellow and yellow/blk wires together. I did this removal about a year back and did not do this when installing a walbro. Does anyone know what this procedure does?

Thanks

Sorry my bad. That procedure is for "testing" the fuel pump. I guess it stops the fuel igniting or something along those lines.

Thanks </TD></TR></TABLE>the part about the jumper wire is for the testing of the fuel pump, not replacement - when you turn the ignition on, the fuel pump should run for about 2 seconds and then shut off - if the pump isn't coming on, what you are doing by jumping the wires is bypassing the Main Relay to see if you are getting power to the fuel pump - if the pump is running with the jumper connected, then you know it is not the pump and could be the Main Relay - if it still isn't running, you probe the wires at the pump to see if you have power - if you have power, then pump is bad
