Default Consequences for having the wrong torque specifications on your bolts?

Well, I pulled out my transmission, and I plan on putting it back in. Problem is, I dont have a torque wrench, so I wouldn't know what I should apply it too. I'd borrow tools from my teacher, but that's just a big hassle. I was just wondering, what are some of the consequences of not having the right torque specifications?

Invest in a good name-brand torque wrench. The consequences will be so dire it's not even funny. Don't try to wing it.

If you think that's a hassle, then ******* up your engine will be disastrous on a planetary level

the conswequences are.

if they are too loose they might come out.

if they are too tight then you might strip the threads and have a problem.

just torque those tranny bolts down to german spec. GUDENTITE (good n tight)

you should be fine

Haha, man it took me 4 hours to just pull out my automatic transmission. ( It was my first time, and I my back was killing me )

Hmm, I guess I'll just talk to my automechanics teacher and ask him to lend me his torque wrench.

Well, this is sorta off topic, I was wondering if dirt build up in my transmission, or gunk period all over my engine is going to cause performance issues. I pulled out the plug to drain my transmission, and there was GUNK, and like all this residue all over the bolt.

i picked up a craftsman torque wrench at sears for 20 bucks. you could always just do that.

but both times i put my tranny back on i just tightened them as hard as i could with a little 3/8 drive ratchet.

then put a tiny bit more with a breaker bar.

no problems for me

you dont really need to torque down a transmission anyway but if its that big of a deal to you go rent one from autozone!

You're obviously a young person trying to learn how to repair your car...congratulations.

I know that most Autozones will loan you tools if you leave a small deposit. For most people, going to Sears and purchasing their Craftsman line of tools are good enough. If you join their tool club, you get discounts on top of already sale price tools...that's what I did for torque wrenches. The good thing about it is, you can take them back and get a replacement (no questions asked) if they ever break.

If you plan on making a career out of working on cars, spend the extra money and go with some of the higher end stuff (Snap-on, MAC etc.)...hope it works out well for you.

Snap on is a load of crap, i get the same parts from amazon for Fractions of the price.

Snap-on's $60 honda specific valve lash adjustment tool was $12 shipped on amazon.

^ Specialty tools are like that. Their everyday wrenches, ratchets, sockets, etc. are WELL worth the money if you're in the business. The same goes for other quality tool manufacturers (Matco, MAC, SK, etc.).

yeah just blast the tranny bolts on at full power, they are big bolts and can handle themselves..... they grow up so fast

I can respect the fact that you may have a preference for a particular brand of tools. If your only issue is the price of Snap-on, that's a completely separate issue...the quality is still good.

They do have quality parts, but it's ridiculous to spend more on a few snap-on part than you would a whole craftsman toolset.
