What ECU/distributor/injectors to run with a d16y8?
I have a d16y8 swapped into my CRX. For the past year I have been running the stock d16a6 distributor/ecu/injectors with a fields Vtec controller. I want to get more performance out of the motor and get the proper fuel/timing maps for Vtec but I can't decide the best route! Please help! Here are the options I am considering:
1) convert to OBD1 (I'll have to get a distributor, are z6 and y8 distributors the same?), I'd also need to make a conversion plug
2) get the zdyne 1-wire b16a ECU conversion (but does this have the proper maps for the y8? or is it only for the b16a?)
3) Greddy piggy-back computer
4) Hondata (but I heard this only is compatable with OBD1)
5) AEM (this is way too expensive though)
I'm trying trying to keep costs to the minimum....any suggestions??? Should I stick with the set-up I am running? The engine runs real well, but I feel that I am not getting the full potential out of Vtec. I also want to upgrade my cam and valve springs in the future, so having so "tunability" would be nice...
Thanks

Go OBD-I... you'll be glad you did in the long run. The conversion is not too tough, and you'll want to run a p28 ecu... I'm pretty sure that the z6/y8 distributor's are completely compatable...? anyone know for sure? and yes, you'll have to make that convertor harness or buy one. The harness is a B*tch to make, but it's cheaper thn buying one
I did the whole D16Y8 swap into my CRX, running OBD-I with the Y8 distrib, injectors, and p28 ecu. Wasn't too tough, even for me
I'd say this the best route, considering the maps are exactly suited to the engine.
Since you're local, solorex, I'll show you my car (if you'd like) when I get the darn tranny working.

so a p28 ecu is the OBD1 out of a 92-95 Ex (Si in Canada)? I assume that the d16z6 distributor doesn't bolt up to the y8 (because the CRX one doesn't bolt to the z6 without modification, but bolts to the y8)
I guess the question is, can you use the y8 distributor (OBDII) with the OBD1 ECU? Anyone?

physically the mounting tabs from the z6 and y8 dist's are different, but you can use a y8 dist/injectors with a p28 ecu.
How is the swap coming along 89y49?

(WHOOPS! my brother forgot to sign out!!! I replied in his name! This is 89_Y_49, though!)
Ahh swap's coming along well, thanks
Fired it up a few days ago, no codes...
Had two, no three major problems, though:
1. I have an AEM cam gear (came with the engine), and I left the upper timing belt cover off to show it off
, but it caused the lower timing cover to come a little loose and in contact with the three bolts that hold the cam gear on.. TICK TICK TICK... thought it was internal!!! Scared the crap out of me!
2. BIG electrical short... I was dumb enough to forget to tighten down the negative battery cable ground, and the car wouldn't start (wires smoked too)
3. Clutch cable was so poorly adjusted I couldn't select gears with the car on
adjusted and hopefully fixed this as well...
BTW, there is a vacuum port on the back of the intake manifold, and it's kind of by itself... what did you do about it? I just capped it off... is this OK, or is it supposed to go somewhere specific?

Here's another question:
Can the CRX distributor work with the p28 ECU? I am trying to avoid having to buy a distributor....

Trending Topics
The D16A6 distributor will NOT work with the p28 ECU... OBD-O verses OBD-I..
You may have to buy a d16y8 distributor...
However, the rest of the changeover is cheap... 150 CDN for p28, and I made the converter harness, so it was free... just make sure you get the plugs and about 10" of wire with the ECU.
i have a d16y8 and i used a pr3, si distributor (modified bolt holes), SiR injectors in my 88 CRX Si. it was the cheapest and easiest thing to do i think, all i had to do to the motor was add the coolent **** off a dx (obd0) that goes on the back of the block and coolent sensor (already a hole in block) and it worked fine for me
sorry about all the questions!
Can the CRX 1-wire O2 sensor be used with the p28 ECU? Or do I have to switch to a 4-wire heated O2 sensor (OBDI)?

Hey, no worries man!
That's what Honda-Tech is here for...
Anyways, yes, you'll have to add the 4 wire O2 sensor... other steps include: removing the injector resistors, changing the injector plugs, and I'll think of more later
